Removing labels from microfibre towels

Hi,

I received my Big Blue II waffle weave drying towel yesterday. It has a label on it an I want to remove it but it seems to be stitched in pretty well. If I pull hard I'm concerned that the silk trim and towel will tear. If I cut it off will the remaining tag stub cause scratching?

Thanks.

IMO just cut it as close to the stitching as you can. I have done this and you can not feel it if you run it along your hand. you can hardly see any white where the tag was even close up. if you rip it off you risk of screwing up the stitches. this has worked for me in the past. have to admit I have a cool pair of small fly tying scissors with a very small profile, they are made for some delicate work. Wallyworld should have something similar and fairly cheap. good luck!

I'm pretty sure those labels are made of material that doesn't scratch the finish.

this is from the cma site, could be bs, but the lables do feel soft.

"The sewn-in tag is scratchless, silk Microfiber. It's a small thing but it demonstrates how we considered every aspect of Big Blue II. No part of this towel can cause drying swirls or scratches.

I'm sorry guys but in all my years in the textile business, especially specializing in silk, I have never heard of anyone developing silk microfiber. When you remove the label put a match to it, let me know if it smells like burning hair, or celery, and if it burns to ash or if it melts. I'm very curious about this.

what about the edges on the towel, should we remove those also?

These aren't normal tags found on every towel, they are super soft. We're not talking about every MF, just the BIg Blue WW II. If you have one, feel the label.

the edging is made from the same material -

4. Big Blue II has a new, "scratchless" edging. Big Blue II is completely edged in 100%, scratchless, silk Microfiber. It will not create swirls or scratches in paint or clear coat finishes.

I'm guessing that when they say "silk microfiber" they really mean a kind of no-nap microfiber similar to the type that comes with sunglasses. But that's just a guess; I don't own a Big Blue II. If you try the "burn test" you'll just get a black plastic wad and toxic fumes.

For regular tags I use a technique very similar to what Autofiber recommends. Make sure you cut through the holes in the tag "connecting the dots" so to speak and leave the last little bit still attached rather than cutting the tag off completely. That way the little sliver isn't sewn in any more but there is still enough connected that you can grip onto.

If it's still holding on tight enough to rip the tag while pulling I usually go at it in the middle with a small probe and a pair of small needle-nose pliers.

I really don't like those labels - - I'd prefer if they weren't attached in the 1st place.

CUT !!

The problem with cutting those labels is they are under the border and you can't really get to the root of it. Have to actually have one to see it, but it would be very hard to completely remove the label and not seperate the towel.

If your afraid of the label scratching then you have to remove the whole border because it appears they are made of the same thing.

I've used them for a long time and never have had a problem.

Yeah, having to cut labels sucks. :angry

Hey DFTowel, you're in the textile biz, is there some kind of law forcing manufacturers to label finished product? Why can't they just label the packaging?

While I used to cut the labels out very carefully, I started getting lazy and just ripped them out. Some of my MFs frayed a little bit, but none of them were very bad. So now I just tear them out as cleanly as I can and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Gee, something I'm not overkill-careful about

This is the towel that we're referring to here

See the dark blue edge? It's a silky material. That's what they are saying is the same material as the tag.
