Removing Jeep doors w/o paint damage?

Hi everyone, I'm itching to remove my Wrangler doors and go cruising around town. I see it's simply held on by bolts, but I'm afraid to remove the doors due to scratching the painted bolts. Is there a safe way to remove them without harming my paint? :confused:



Also, how do I keep the dome light from staying on when I take the doors off? The little switch in the door jamb should prevent it from going out.
 
As one fellow Jeeper to another I bought a Jeep door removal wrench for www.4wd.com



They claim it won't chip the paint. I use it and it did not do any harm, although my Jeep is new so the bolts were not that tight either. As fa as the lights go, I bought the "lights out" clamp also from 4wd.com. They clamp on the door buttons yet still allow you to use the dome light switch if needed. I'll see if I can find some links.

Cool, thanks for the links :xyxthumbs I'm not really sure how that'd keep from chiping the paint though, it looks like a regular wrench. I was thinking it would be rubber lined or something.
 
It has something on it, not rubber but maybe multiple coats of paint to help aid in not chipping. You could also wrap tape around the nut and put a piece on the door directly behind the hinge and use a regular 13 or 14 mm socket and take them off as well.
 
If you drive a jeep and are taking the doors off and are worrying about 'scratching' the bolts you shouldn't be taking the doors off in the first place.. IMHO

You are just doing it to "be cool" :wall



BTW- Everyon I know and every jeep I`ve ever been around has never put the bolts back on after takingthem off the first time. I can slide my doors on/off within 1 minute and not scratch the paint (not like it matters) And yes my jeep is dented and scratched - I use it for what it's made for 4 WHEELING :)
 
First off, I'm worried about scratching the paint because I"M ON A DETAILING MESSAGE BOARD, :rolleyes:. Makes pretty good sense, and you know what, I DO drive a jeep, though I "shouldn't."

Oh, you're right-on about the part about wanting to be cool. How did you know? Who told you? Were they cool, and did they have their doors off their Jeep?

Basically dude, my Jeep is not a redneck mobile, so I don't intend for it to ever look like a total piece of crap. Plus, It's brand-spanking new. So if you would recommend to scratch up a new vehicle and not think twice, then you have no business on this message board...

You got a jeep to keep pretty, and remove the doors for street driving :idea

I have no problem keeping the jeep clean and detailed I do so to mine every now and then, and it's got a few beauty marks on it. Curious as to why you want to remove your doors if you are only going to be on the street? I never once suggested scratching your new vehicle but if you are that worried about the ever so tiny bolt that holds the doors on then why not leave the doors on? Surely you don't need the visibility for street driving, thus my comment on doing it to be "cool". :think:



BTW: Just because my jeep is dented and scratched does NOT make it a redneck mobile! There is a big difference between a quality made jeep and a redneck beater.



I also did not mean to start an argument about jeeps and detailing sorry for the jab and if I offended you.
 
I see what you're saying about taking the doors off now. Well, a big reason for removing the doors is so that the Jeep is more comfortable to drive in. Lol I can't afford to drive it with the top up and air conditioning on anymore.

I would like to get half doors for offroading, but the stealership has no half doors in my color, even though I just bought the darn thing a couple months ago :angry. I'm going to have to snag some at the junk yard, but not for awhile since I don't plan on off roading till I get the bugs worked out of the vehicle.
