This is a problem that I encounter when I polish my car. The buff pad turns red, everything picks up the paint color. I am led to beleive that the clearcoat is very thin if there at all. I am not sure if it is a base coat, clear coat system on the volvo. I have not researched it much. and thought I would pose the question to the professional detailers that may have delt with similar situations. I have been detailing for a number of years 11 if I count right, and I have never delt with a vehicle like this until I bought this car. When I polish the car it turns out great, shines, good reflections, soft to the touch, ECT. Here are a few pics of the car after detail.

As you can see the finish is great. so why is it leaking pigment onto my pad ? Can I seal it, or just repaint it:faint:
 
My guess is single-stage. That color looks a lot like my old 16v GTI that was single-stage. If the pad turns red and you get results like that... single stage (or lots of oxidation, but you'd notice that). Personally, I haven't done a red volvo of that era, but other volvos I have done were all clear-coated.
 
So how would you care for single stage? Is this normal, the color transfer? This is what I have done so far. 3M clay bar with a good wash, I buffed with a 3M perfect-it 3 swirl removing pad blue foam, with Megs swirl removing polish #82 using the 9227C. I rewashed with Griots car soap to remove any excess oils, and such. I then sealed with ZFX twice. It looks great, and it beads awsome. Should I top it with nuba like Megs #26 ? Forgive me I never delt with this issue before.:geez
 
Single stage will always transfer paint to your pads.

Top it with megs #26 if you want. Topping a sealant with a wax boils down to personal preference.

There's no difference in washing, polishing, and protecting procedures between clear coat and SS.
 
The red 850 R's (Volvo paint code 609) are painted single stage with clearcoated bumpers and lower side skirts. As stated above, the color transfer is normal. The single stage paint on Volvos of that era is fairly easy to work with and really holds up well.
 
I would like to get into more of a correction process on this one. It has alot of light surface scratches everywhere, looks like someone slid cardboard boxes across the paint. The polishing that I have done so far has brightened it up ALOT, but there are still imperfections that I still see. Would it hurt it in any way if I was to advance to a heavy cut process, and work my way back to jewling? Explain single stage. I understand basecoat/clearcoat. Is single stage the pigment,and the clear premixed ? Sorry, I really want to learn.
 
The clear is mixed into the paint in single stage.. It's just that.. Single stage. One shot only. The good thing about single stage paint is you can get it to a mirror finish so nicely. I love single stage because of the results you can get. The downside is that that it's hard to keep looking that good due to the fact that there's no clear layer on top to protect it.



Definitions of Automotive paint



Paint Types:



There are basically two main types of paint: Single stage and Two-stage. Single stage paints have the glossy clear actually mixed into the paint and can be applied with "color and gloss", if you will, in one stage. Single stage paints include "Acrylic Enamel (most common), Acrylic Lacquer, and Synthetic Enamel". These types of paint were most commonly used in automotive purposes up until the early '80's until the release of two stage paints. Two stage paints are commonly referred to as "base-coat / clearcoat". Naturally, your first-stage is to spray a flat color coat, then spray your gloss on as the second stage.



Two-stage paints give you more control on how "glossy" your finish is and are a bit more durable than standard single stage. The down-side is that they are a bit more expensive than standard single stage paint. I would estimate $100-$150 for a complete single stage paint compared to $150-$250 for two-stage. Now, that is "man off the street" pricing. If you know someone that works at an autobody place, have them order it for you. They can get it a lot cheaper plus the person mixing your paint cares more for "their" repeat business. Autobody places get a better price from paint stores for the more they buy in a year, so it is better for them, too.
 
very nice looking R. i have a T5 that i put an R bumper and spoiler on. it was recently repainted so it a two stage but the previous poster is correct that the original paint is single stage.

What mods have you done ? The shine on yours is sick (envy). I really dont know what work has been done to mine, but it looks like the whole engine has been torn down at one time. Its very clean all the way to the bottom. All the pipes have been custom made, turbo piping, exhaust, all custom made. I dont know much about volvo so tell me what you see. I bought it from the auction sight unseen. I used to have a stroked 5.0, this volvo would burn its doors. Its great to see another volvo in a post, and such a nice one at that. Nice car ! Mods-

exterior: 20% tint, 5k HID's, tinted tails, new paint with a little custom paintwork done (black around window pillars, painted mouldings), ipd grille

Suspension/brakes: koni adj. struts/shocks, ipd lowering springs, hd endlinks, upgraded anti-sway bars, upgraded 302mm rotors

Engine: samco turbo hoses, silicone vac hoses, RICA ecu tune, 3'' dp, 2.5'' catback

From what I can see... you have S60/V70 R style wheels, Koni struts, OEM strut brace, Euro corner lights, and some kind of custom turbo piping. Everything appears to be nicely done.

Fredricksburg auto auction in VA, maybe June? I will check out that site Ryan. Thanx for the lead. As I stated before I own one with 380 on the clock, and the spedo cable was unhooked for 2 years while being used as a commuter car. It will still start, no smoke, it passed emisions, and state inspection thats what prompted me to buy another volvo, but this time I did a little research, and found out they made an R edition so the hunt began. What I love about the car is its luxury feel, nice ride, plenty of passing power, and for a family car its looks are stunning. I dont know sh*$ about turbo cars. The car of my younger years were V8 5.0s. By the way connor that car is clean.:cool: Why is it not with you anymore?:cry:
 
I sold the car almost 2 years ago. Actually I wasn't planning to sell, but someone made me a really good offer on the car so I let it go.
 
It was a second car and nothing has replaced it yet. I'm down to just one car now (BMW 328i). In a couple years when I'm hopefully able to afford my first house with a garage, I will get another weekend car. It will likely be some sort of BMW M car.
 
As promised the famed volvo 740. Almost 1/2 million miles on this car, 408,000 ? The spedo was unhooked for 3 years, and it was used as a commuter car. Still runs great, passes emissions, and surprisingly reliable. This is the car that prompted my 850R purchase. Look with caution ! You will need to wash your eyeballs out with dawn. This one has a clearcoat FAILURE !
