Red Metallic Venza and OptiGuard

I have previously posted about the waiting period required before waxing a newly painted panel. (2 ½ weeks old)

Feedback I have received indicates anywhere from 30 to 90 Days is required before applying protection. As you detailing fanatics can imagine, waiting this length of time scares me.

Can Meguiars Quick Detailer (mist & wipe / Red Bottle) be use to apply some sort of protection without sealing the paint within this lengthy curing period? Or any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

The Meguiar's QD that you mention is not going to offer your paint any protection at all. I have the same product and will use it on the running boards to remove dust, footprints, etc. and sometimes to wipe down the plastic lining in the wheelwells if they are only dusty.

My advice is to tough it out for 30 days before using a sealant, wax, etc. I can understand your desire to protect the paint, but in the long run you are better off allowing proper cure time.

I agree with Articwhite. The most protection I can think of is a non-abrasive glaze like 3M IHG, Meguiars Hand Polish, or #7. Oh and keep it garaged or covered with a good carcover.

Recently I'd talked a friend of mine into letting me OptiGuard his wife's one-year old Toyota Venza. I've helped apply OptiGuard a couple of times before, and currently have it on my wheels and glass, but when I've used it in the past it's always been for customers of other detailers. This would be the first time I'd be able to get direct feedback of the product and I was excited to use it.

To start off, the Venza was washed with ONR and clayed with CM Blue clay. No pics of that since time was also a factor here. The condition of the paint was fairly swirled.

Unfortunately, my camera struggles a little with reds, especially metallics, but the overall condition was probably a bit worse than the pictures would lead to believe. As a note, I was going to coat the glass but their was some kind of protection on it already. We're talking heavy beading and sheeting almost as good as OG does. They couldn't remember what was done to the car before purchase and hadn't applied anything themselves, so for the time being we skipped the glass.

Since time was an issue, I thought I'd try D300 and MF cutting pads on the Venza. Here is the sun trying to poke through some trees.

I did a corner of the hood with M205 and a crimson HT pad to show the difference it would make, but it was minimal at best. My friend said that to his untrained eye, he couldn't see any real improvement so we decided to just one-step it with D300.

I really can't say enough good things about the MF system. My friend had never picked up a polisher in his life, but after talking him through the hood area, he was good to go on the rest of the car. In the end, I believe we got maybe 85%+ correction out of just the D300. It definitely could have used a second round, but my buddy was thrilled anyway.

Here are the results after OptiGuard.

A couple of notes:

We were going to pull the wheels and coat them, but thanks to a half-size metric lug, my friend rounded out a lug nut and wasn't able to remove even one wheel. They will be done later.

I used a MF applicator instead of foam this time. It seemed to spread easier, and the OG flashed off quickly. There were only a few places where it left high spots, and the applicator easily leveled those.

Overall, on the paint alone I think about 4-5cc of Opti-Guard was used. I've seen it done with a lot less before, and I think maybe the MF app was soaking up more than a foam app would have. But it seemed to lay down easier, so it could be a trade off. Or it could all be in my head.

Thanks for looking!

Looks great!
In my limited experience with the Megs MF DA pads and D300, if you do it right, it really can be used as a great one step process!

Great job Mike!

The Venza looks great. I really need to get some extra money,so I can invest in the Meg's MF System.

Let us know about the durability of the OG.

Thanks! On a previous trip, I'd tried PO203 to see how it would work as a one-step, but I really think the D300 did a better job on this car.

Great work Mike!!! 4-5cc on a vehicle that size is doing pretty dang good IMO! :soldier:
Thanks Chad. I'm guessing that if I had done the glass and wheels, it probably would have been maybe 6cc total. BTW, after a call to OPT, I think I got my water spot problem sorted out. Thanks for the help!

Thank you Barry. I totally agree, you're going to love the MF pads and D300. To be honest, I never bothered with D301 and the finishing pads but I may get around to it just to satisfy my curiosity.

great job on the venza... i used m/f and d300 as a i step on my truck and it came out superb. do you top opti-guard with anything to get that slick feel we all love or you leave it as is..

Beautiful finish!!!!!
Love the Sun pics, they turned out great!!!
Nice looking.

Thanks! I didn't top Opti-Guard with anything, since it seems the general consensus is that you don't gain much other than feel, and may potentially lose some of OGs characteristics until the topper wears off.

Great job! Wonderful 1 step, and the protection looks awesome.
Thanks Luke. From what I've seen, you like your metallic reds too!

Nice job Mike!
Thanks bud, glad you're back!

It's all about the results and having a happy owner, and you were able to accomplish both. Restore life back into a daily while giving it the ultimate protection. Even better, it's a vehicle you'll be able to monitor so you can see how things go with the coating in the future.

Interesting about the mf applicator. Seems like a nice idea though it has it's trade offs. I certainly don't mind using up a bit more product if it might mean a better result / easier result to achieve, so I might have to give that a try.
