Recommended OTC polish by hand?

I have a coworker who had someone scratch something all over the hood of both his and his wife's car. It doesn't look like the scratches are real deep, fairly superficial. He is not a real car buff, so he doesn't have (or probably want to buy) the myriad of products that most of us have. I brought some PB's SSR2 and a terry cloth towel to work today and tried to buff some of the scratches out, got it looking about 60% better (but doing it in the sun in a shirt and tie, I didn't spend a whole lot of time on it...). He lives too far away from me to have me use my PC on it, so I told him he should get a small can of polish and use some elbow grease to finish the job over the weekend.

Any suggestions on a good OTC polish that is readily available and can get good (although with a lot of elbow grease) results? I gave him instructions on what he should do, he just needs a couple more products to do the job. Car has orangish paint, other car is dark gray/silver, both Toyotas I believe.

Thanks,
Neil

I'm thinking ScratchX might be what he needs. Easily available and should work with some elbow grease.

He might also look into Meg's Ultimate Compound, also available OTC. Though I have not used it, so this can't be a recommendation just a suggestion :), I have read where others have used it with pretty good success.

It is supposedly more aggressive than SwirlX<ScratchX<Ultimate Compound.

I would go with the UC over the others. I have taken out some pretty nasty scratches with UC by hand.

Agreed with UC, still takes some force. I was recommended UC and a foam pad on meguiars forum for some serious swirling and scratches. Took 3 passes to improve them, but ultimately a DA buffer made a much bigger difference.
