reattaching badges

I like cheese.
I was wondering what you would suggest I use to reapply the badges I took off of my SUV. I just got it, reworked the paint and took them off to DACP underneath and will be painting them black. I think an adhesive foam tape would be a bit tedious so hopefully there is a liquid alternative? Thanks for the help.

Foam tape is the only thing I know of .. I debadges mine and left it off .. to me looks cleaner.
 
3M does offer a double-sided foam adhesive tape...can be found in any body shop store or larger auto parts store that has an auto body dept.



You could glue them in place but I don't think that would be a great alternative.
 
I picked up some 3M Plastic Emblem and Trim Adhesive ,I think at O"Reilley's Automotive, but you can probably find it a most auto stores and maybe Walmart. It worked great.

Thanks people. Now how do I go about removing the wax under where I wouold like the emblem to go w//o losing protective properties? I was thinking about masking off the outer border of the emblem size and claying. Sound good?

I'm afraid you're gonna lose SOME protective qualities; you're gonna have to just reapply when the badge is back on. Better go a LITTLE bigger than the emblem size to be on the safe side.



Better use a solvent instead of clay. I've found that clay ("regular" clay, not the abrasive "overspray"/red stuff) does NOT really remove much product. If all you have on there is "bare paint", that you've used DACP on (but no wax or sealant), you can just use rubbing alcohol to remove any oils from the DACP.



BTW, *I* too would leave 'em off.
 
Okay, okay. I have decided to leave off the emblems. . . except one. ;) The Toyota cicle dead center has holes underneath it so I will be painting it gloss black (along with "4Runner") and replacing it. You guys are right, it probably wil look better, and is easier to wax around w/o build-up.

Accumulator, when you say solvent, AIO should work fine, right? :o It has all been waxed, except the lisence plate surround. I will probably get some 3M Plastic Emblem and Trim Adhesive at my pep boys down the street. Thanks for the help :xyxthumbs

pssstue - Glad to hear you're leaving off the "glue only" badges. *I* think your ride will look a LOT classier without them :xyxthumbs



As far as reattaching the center one, *NO*, I did *NOT* mean solvent=AIO. Sorry to be so emphatic but I don't want you to mess this up due to misunderstanding. AIO will leave a (somewhat thin) layer of synthetic "wax"/protection on the surface that would compromise your adhesive's adhesion.



I meant a "real" solvent such as PrepSol, 3M Adhesive *REMOVER*, or some other "paint prep" product. Maybe you could get by with rubbing alcohol.



OR, maybe you could get by with NO ADHESIVE AT ALL, relying on just the mounting pins. I have several vehicles whose emblems are ONLY held on with the pins and they're just fine. Maybe a little dab of RTV sealant or badge adhesive on the badge's pins when you pop it back on. :nixweiss if it would work for you, every situation's gonna be a little different, but it's worked OK for me.
