Reapairing chips

Hi guys,



I recently picked up my new car from Japan and found that the previous owner touched up some chips with cellulose paint. To say the least, the job was badly done and even worse was the fact that they used the wrong colour paint so it looks odd. Id there any way i can remove the paint so i can fix the chips myself??

Ok, dont tell anyone I told you but lacquer thinner will remove the paint, however if you get lacquer thinner on your clear it will remove the clear. Tape around the chip and use lacquer thinner on a cotton swab. Twist the swab until you remove some of the paint. You do not have to remove all the paint just enough so that when you cover the chip with the new paint it will be level. Dangerous so be careful and dont blame me if you get lacquer thinner on the clear because I told you to be careful!!!!!

Hmmm i dont know if i should trust myself doing that. I may get a profesional to come and do the job so at least if something goes wrong ile be covered....

How do you know that it is cellulose paint ?

Try thinners as Rightlane suggested. If it is a bodge job then I assume no prep work would have been done so the bond with the original paintwork will not be as good so you should be able to get most of it off.

OEM clear is tested for solvent resistance so if you are careful (use a cotton bud) you shouldn't have any problems. MAybe try alcohol (not the Stella kind though) first and then move up to more aggressive solvents until you have removed the touch up paint. If you see no evidence of touch up removal though maybe it is a good idea to stop.
