Really Old Paint - restore mission

A friend of mine just got a mazda from his sister. it is old 1993 I think and most likely was never waxed once. The paint is red and as dull as you can imagine. When we set out to make it look better we tried a bit of Turtle wax polishing compound ( It was what he had) at any rate we notice that the red paint started coming off on the rag. He then stopped in fear that we would make it worse. I was thinking that it didn't have a clear coat and that we could stand to make it look better by getting some 3M find cut compound and my pc and abraiding away that top layer of paint all together in hopes to find a better layer beneath. Then put down some glaze or polish. then a sealant and a few coats of wax.

Does this sound feasible?

I did this job with just Klasse AIO and a PC. Boy oh boy did the pads get red. It was just the oxidation doing that though. Maybe some paint came off, but it was paint that needed to be removed in order to make it look better. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Unless you start to see primer then you are fine. :p

I think you'll be fine with what you have planned. Make sure you get some before and after pics. They make you look like you know what you are doing when they are on red. ;) lol

wow that looks incredible. that is exactly what condition his paint is in. I will 'con' him into letting me try it on his car. Once he see what is possible how can he say no. Too bad I didn't have an orbital that would be a great practice car.

get a pc that would make a perfect practice car like you said cause you can't make the paint any wosre then it is from the way it sounds:xyxthumbs
