Ready for the range

Alone here familiar with bull pup rifles? Used one? Like them, hate them?

I stumbled onto this when reading the latest NRA magazine:

https://deserttech.com/product_overview.php?product_id=4&load=product_overview

A bullpup, CQB oriented rifle available in .308.

Ive been interested in a SBR 308 for a future build/purchase. The more I look, the more problematic it appears to be. 308 AR`s are tricky with getting pieces to match and fit- it would likely require me to have someone build it for me. From what I can tell, nobody sells a an SBR 308, so to get something off the rack I`d have to have somebody chop the barrel down. Pricy and inconvenient. SCAR`s look quite sweet, and they off a CQB barrel for the 17, but $2700 for the rifle then another $1300 for the additional barrel- from what I`ve read, they don`t seem to sell this configuration as is- is just too much. Add the ATF stamp to all of these, and they`re all pricy and a PITA.

In walks this MDR from Desert Tech, and it`s very intriguing. Basically, I want a CQB rifle for home defense. Why? Because I don`t really like pistols that much and shotguns are messy.

Ive seen the IWI Tavor, looks cool but only available in a 5.56. Really stuck on a 308 for this.

Open to any feedback anyone can offer.

I shot a SCAR 17 with ACOG and it shoots so soft compared to my Tikka bolt .308. The SCAR Literally makes the 7.62 feel like 1/2 the recoil of the .308 Tikka. Shoot the SCAR and then tell yourself you don`t want one. I want one but the prices are in a league of their own. Makes ARs prices seem like HiPoint price wise.

No experience with shooting bullpup rifles. Definitely a product of form follows function. But gives you all the advantages of a SBR and none of the disadvantages. The bullpup design makes so much more sense for military, LE, and in your case home defense. Love the compactness with a 16 in barrel. The design of a bullpup would grow on me too.

.308 is overkill for CQB, a .223 is more than adequate, is more controllable, and typically has a greater ammo capacity. The additional penetrating power of the .308 is likely to be more of a liability than an asset.

Heh heh, I was just wondering what people here are using the .308 for, figured it was mostly just fun at the range. Home defense with a .308? No thanks, except in some pretty extradordinary circumstances (more extraordinary than, say....a home invasion in a pretty rural suburb).

Woohoo! Finally here! Gotta get to the range now soon to get it broke in

Will do. Just found out a guy in my neighborhood that I`m detailing a truck for in a couple weeks is a member at a private outdoor pistol/rifle club and offered to take me!

A friend of mine has one of those, and I was really impressed with it. Very well made and designed, and shoots well, too.

I`ve run some Winchester, but generally use standard Federal range ammo for practice and planning on running Federal HST for defense ammo (will get in some range time with the HST to make sure it plays nice with the Shield)

Just using the standard sights for now. Will re-evaluate once I get comfortable with the gun

House of Wax- Ah, OK. Gotta admit I`m all about cheap cheap cheap when it comes to practice ammo :o

Got any snap-caps/dummy rounds for range practice? I find `em incredibly helpful but my wife just shrugs `em off and does fine without `em (though I`m better at malfunction-clearing from using them all the time).

And on the sights, your (younger) eyes are undoubtedly better than mine :D I would consider some night-sights/etc. though, [bad stuff] seldom happens in good lighting.

I hear ya on the range ammo. A guy I work with had actually been using Federal Aluminum rounds that he gets at Wal-Mart and after several hundred rounds has had no trouble. Decent bit cheaper too.

Night sights are something I need to look into

I`m so out-of-date...I didn`t even know Federal made aluminum ones! In the .45s we practice with S&B but !oh man! is that dirty stuff. It was really cheap though (in case-lots).

See what you think about ones from XS Sight Systems. My *old* tritium ones are dead and I think I`ll go with the XS Big Dots when I get around to replacing them. I don`t like the common "three dot" ones and the Big Dots seem like a better version of what I`m used to.

If you target practice a lot (I no longer do), you`ll save money by "rolling your own". It costs a bit to set up a progressive press initially but if you`re shooting a hundred rounds a week (or more) you`ll get your money back in spades. I use to shoot several hundred rounds week after week for a number of years, I could not have done this paying retail for ammo. There is however a dark side to reloading. You set aside time to reload but you end up with lots of ammo. You have lots of ammo, you feel like you can shoot more. You shoot more, you reload more. Vicious cycle that can be a real drain on ones time.

Get a chrono, experiment, document your loads and shooting sessions and soon you`ll learn what you shoot the best and what your firearm likes the most. This all said, reloading is a great little hobby all of it`s own and is certainly "something to do" on the rainy days you can`t detail or shoot. :)

I don`t unfortunately shoot nearly enough to make reloading worth it. sounds like a great hobby to pick up in retirement lol

What are you guys using for belts/holsters? I`m all but settled on an Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0 and one of their belts. Seem pretty well reviewed and price is reasonable. I`ve got one of their OWB holsters for my Sig and it`s a pretty nice piece

I make my own kydex holsters. Carry my shield in one everyday.

It`s a rewarding hobby and lots of fun.

All sorts of accessories to get!
