Ready for the range

That's awesome! I am planning on buying my 8 year old a S&W M&P 15-22 to shoot.
That's a great gun, one every kid should have some where along the way. I'm sure you have your reasons for that choice and I don't mean to interfere. That said, I'll throw this out there anyway. As a rifle to "learn on", it's tough to beat a 10-22 Ruger. These are light and easy to handle for a kid, not so short that they're considered a toy but if short is desired there is the youth model. I'd probably do the bolt release mod to make it easier for small hands to manipulate. That's a 20 minute job and requires no special parts though you can buy a release for it as well. The reliability factor is virtually unsurpassed.

I have a couple of .22's based on the AR platform and though it isn't a show stopper, they seem to have quirks, usually with the mags. Kids don't need anything that won't go bang when they pull the trigger. Playing around with a jammed .22 can be dangerous. I'd probably feel entirely different if it were going to a 15 year old. Another consideration is that the Ruger has several mods after the fact that can turn them into a Bull Pup configuration or other clones.

Not interfering in any way bud. I should of been more specific. It is mainly for me, partially for him . In other words just an excuse to buy it lol. I have a Marlin Model 15YN .22 (that was mine at his age) that he will learn on. I am going to work him up to the 15-22 as he gets older.

I will definitely keep my eye out for a Ruger. If I'm not mistaken, I believe my father has one he can try out.

It is insane the amount of mods and what you can do with those Rugers. And the price makes them almost impossible to turn down

Perhaps bested in "drop in" mods only by the AR platform. Ruger Mark II's and III's also have a ton of upgrades available for them.

Fingers crossed:

Gun Owners Rejoice, .22LR Production is Going Up This Year

This article written by Dean Weingarten and reprinted with permission.
I talked to Dan Compton at the Shot Show about what was going on with .22 production. Everyone is interested in the situation with the ongoing .22 ammunition bubble for the last three years. Store shelves have been empty more often than not. Dan is a Senior Product Line Specialist for Vista Outdoors, which includes CCI and Federal brands. I also talked with other people at the Vista booths and in the industry.
Over the last year, the decision was made to increase .22 rimfire production. Now it will take about a year to implement that decision. Part of that decision is based on the belief that the overall market has expanded to include more new shooters, young shooters, women and urban shooters. Dan said that the style of shooting has changed as well:
“We call it the ‘Call of Duty’ style. Lots of rounds downrange increases demand. The rounds expended per session has gone up. Where people might have shot a 50 rd box before, now they shoot a 525 round box, and they don’t stop until it is empty.”
I talked to Dan of my understanding of the bubble. There are about 50-80 million .22 owners in the U.S. If a few million decide that instead of the partially used box of 50 or a hundred rounds, they want to have a couple of bricks on hand, the demand increases beyond what production can handle for years. Dan said that was a very good way of looking at it.

Dan was a little vague about actual numbers, but sources in the industry assured me that both Federal and CCI were looking to increase production by about 20% this coming year. Obviously, no one can promise that the increased production will actually come on line in 2016, but that is the plan.
One source said that CCI needed to put up a new building for the production facility.
I also heard that CCI is currently maxed out, producing about 4 million rounds a day, and Federal is also running at top capacity at about 8 million.
One employee told me that the numbers per day vary depending on what sort of rounds were being produced. Some types of .22 rounds take longer than other types.
What kind of rounds are produced is a complicated scheduling process, with the schedule being set up about two months in advance, based on orders. .22 Stingers might be run for two 8 hour shifts, then a shift of .22 quiet rounds, for example. The machines keep running 24 hours a day, only stopping for 15 minute intervals at lunch breaks and between shifts, when maintenance is done.
CCI and Federal dominate the U.S. market, so a 20% increase in production will have an impact.
Much of the .22 bubble is political in nature. But an increase in new shooters and changes in shooting style will keep the machines producing .22 ammunition busy for a long time.

Heh heh, that M249S is kinda an answer looking for a question, but I bet they'll sell a few of 'em. Reminds me of the (rather pricey!) semi-only version of the BAR.

haha, true story. If nothing else, I'm just really interested in anything military related. I'd very badly like to add a Garand to my collection some day

Do we have any CCW members here? I've been looking for CCW classes to take and there's a ton of instructors around me. How did you guys choose who to go with?
