Re-cutting pads - exactly how?

I have a wolfgang orange pad that after only a few uses (like 2 cars) the texture of the pad changed drastically...like it's falling apart. None of my other (white and blue) pads are doing this. I don't know, maybe this is normal for the orange pad?



Anyways, I don't like it...



I've read a few threads now that explain recutting pads, but they don't go into much of anything as far as details go, and it leaves a lot to interpretation - which I did, and tried :)



What I did was take a very sharp, long knife, and while the pad was spinning on my rotary, I held the knife to the pad. At first I tried having the blade going with the rotation; this didn't give me very good results - the very rough texture stayed the same.



I then tried the blade against the rotation, and although this seemed to work much better, I only got a moderate improvement. But it doesn't look like anything i was expecting...to look somewhat close to new.



I could (and will) buy a new pad, eventually. But if this is going to happen every 2 cars, I cannot, and will not, spend $15.99 all the time. :hairpull

damn....15.99 per pad....look into the lake country pads...only 7.$$ from exceldetail.com - almost 2for1 for you and I get great results from the orange pad

Well, thanks for the link; I've bookmarked it. However, those pads look like their worth $7, sorry. I can just imagine how hard they are to get centered. However, I'd rather not get into this discussion of which pads I can use, since it's off topic.



Anyone have re-cutting suggestions? What about a really fine grater? :idea
 
Your not real concise on what you didnt like. Most orange pads ar stiffer then other colors and obviously have a different place in detailing. If your expecting slightly better results with the Orange, but the same funcionality, youve been mislead.....Do a quick search for , orange polishing pad, orange pads, etc until youve come up with an answer to whatever advice your seeking.
 
A little off the topic here, but I always thought that LakeCountry made the Wolfgang pads... I have both and the foam certainly feels the same, though the LC ones are notably cheaper.

Correct. They're Lake Country pads - technically. Anyways, the main point of this thread that I started is two fold:



1. Is the pad's condition/texture (which appears to be a falling-apart-process) normal?



and if not...



2. How do I properly re-cut the pad to remove the undesired texture, which doesn't happen on any of the other wolfgang (lake country) pads?
 
Cutting pads are subject to more abrasive polishes and more pressure during use. That naturally causes them to wear out more quickly. Not a whole lot you can do about it. My finishing pads last forever because I use such mild products with them and little pressure since I am not using the pad or product to do any cutting.
