Random Act of Violence

Well...last night did a great job of cleaning my new c230. Used Gold Class Shampoo and some Meguiars QD. The car looked excellent. Used Meguiars Hot Shine spray on the wheels. When i pulled into my apt comples (i clean at my mothers house) it was definately the cleanest on the complex and shined under the flourescent lights.

This morning I woke up and was about to undertake my daily errands when i noticed that a good windstorm had blown debris on my car. I was about to remove two long black strands when i noticed that someone had the audacity to Key the hood of my car. They left 2 gashes that would have surely sunk the Titanic itself. The measure approximatly 18" each and are Deep. Buffage is not even an option.

Got a quote on what it would cost to fix/repaint it and was quoted $320 including blending the hood to the fenders since its a beautiful Metallic Silver. My family thinks that since i do not know who did this and that i still live at the apt complex i should wait a couple of months for the repair work. I am ready to repair next week. Their thoughts on the situation is that this person is still out there and may feel that since i was quick to repair that he might be quick to redamage.

So that brings me to why i am here now. I wanted to get some opinions from my autopia family. Its not the fact that it got vandalized that bothers me the most, its the fact that i live in this apt complex and this perp is probably still here and indeed may do this again. Quite frankly i do not have the money to keep repainting a potential revolving door. I never pissed anyone off, never leave my apt, so im shocked at why this was done other than thanks to this site i had one fine looking car :bigups

So what do you all think? I would love some thoughts on the subject and also anythign i should really look for with this Metallic Silver repaint.

I think I would have a video camera installed in the car. Catch the SOB that did it...then beat his arse.....no sympathy..no questions...he needs his arse kicked without a doubt...sometimes violence is the answer....cops catch him...he probably can't afford to pay for the damage....

$320 to paint and blend? Wow that is cheap it was $500 for my hood when something similar happened to me.

Get some Glock decals and "I love my pit bull" stickers and put them on your window.

Was quoted with $420 at the Mercedes Dealership. My father works for Chevrolet and has people that he contracts do do repair work. His people gave a quote of the $320 which is dealer price so the savings are passed on to me. The painter works on cadillacs and what not and is known to do good work. Got lucky there, just not sure if i should go rush out to paint or wait till May.

I would almost guarantee that it was someone who was just jealous. Generally living in an apartment is bad for your car, someone once sprayed silly string over the side of my car. It comes off the paint easily but after four years i can still see the spot where it hit the rubber trim and baked in the sun all day.

Sounds like a sure way to get your car totally trashed as soon as the bad guy gets a chance and comes looking for revenge.

It's probably envy, a number of people I know who drive Mercedeses, Lexuses etc have had their cars keyed out of jealousy. I'd bet that its probably random, and not a targeted attack. I'd give it a solid week, see if it gets keyed again. If it does, put out a camera and keep a collapsable baton or other blunt weapon handy. If it doesn't, go for the repaint and chalk it up to jealousy.

You could always spend a few hours pretending like you're taking care of the damage, maybe wax it or something to that effect. Just something to make it seem as if you just spent a lot of time on it and then see if they come back.

If he does... Then rinse and repeat. People who key cars for no reason other than the fact that the car looks good and they are jealous, are THE lowest scum on the earth. If anyone keys my car, I just hope I catch them red handed.

You would be surprised at how effective a video is in court. Had a similar problem 5 years ago. Luckily for me, the bank next door to where we were had a camera that caught the person and car they were in pouring brake fluid on several cars. The guys were arrested and each of us(3) were giving our estimate amout, plus court cost. They may not have any money, but the judgement I have is good for 7 years and if I haven't been paid in full, I can get it renewed for another 7 years and will. This is on their credit record and will follow them and is not dischargeable by Bankruptcy, he tried that. Will I ever get my money? Probably not. But as much as I would have loved to done something bad to the guys,I did what was "legally" right. No matter what else you decide to do, get a video camera and catch who it is. The rest is up to you. But be careful, damage to a car is not worth getting shot over, or doing something you might regret and going to jail for. Good Luck!

I'm not sure what kind of alarm system comes on a new C230, but my aftermarket alarm would certainly have gone off if someone keyed my truck. I have a 145db siren and also have it hooked to my dual-note horn so in a relatively enclosed space it hurts your ears!

A remote pager notifying you of your car being tampered with improves your chances of catching the bas**** in the act. Lastly, a hidden video camera like the other gents mentioned, with the ability to have a wireless transmission to a monitor in your apartment could come in great use also.

Should these fail you, does your state have CCW laws?

EDIT: I see now you are in Texas. Conceal and carry should not be an issue down there :)

That stinks man sorry to hear. Do what some are saying and get a camera. check the insurance from the apt bld(probably a dead end though). 320 is a good deal to paint a hood and blend.

are their survalance/camera systems available for this purpose? ... any links?

You might want to check out the LogicTech web site http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/US/EN, I know at one time they had a feature in the software that you could set the cam up to start record when it detects motion (someone around your car). Of course you would need some place to hide the cam, and you would need a USB cable long enough to reach your computer....

Man that sucks. I would just get it repaired and be done with it. Who knows why someone would do this and if you tried to catch the person again, setting up cameras, you would just be wasting a lot of your own time. You won't catch someone doing it because it already happened. You just wish you could catch them but you can't.

Someone keyed my Jetta, and I have absolutely no idea why. I was pretty sure it was in a grocery store parking lot in a not so great neighborhood. The spaces were tight and I parked very carefuly to be centered. I figured someone thought I didn't leave them enough room so they keyed my door. But it is possible it happened in my parking garage at work, although I doubt it. So my mind got to wondering who did it and where, even though I was sure it happened at that grocery store. And you can wonder about that forever.

Whoever did it is not worth your time...and likely would not do it again. You mentioned the storm and debris blowing around. Could it be it was caused by that? Nevertheless, I would just get it repaired through insurance and be done with it. It goes under comprehensive not collision and it cannot affect your rates.

I felt the same way about reinstalling a stereo in my car when it was broken into by Nikolas Lampkin of Fort Worth, Texas but I was informed a few days later by the police that they had Nikolas Lampkin in custody and he had my HU in his possession.

I agree Scott, I had my car stereo stolen from me and never reinstalled one. At least the thiefs were idiots, they cut themselves and there was blood all over the center dash and console. Yea I had to clean it up, but at least I know they were injured. Cops never found the guy though, I reported the HU stolen and have never heard anything back about it.
