Rail dust

what is rail dust??

Technically it comes from when the cars are transported via train. The metal shavings from the trains brakes gets stuck on the car. It also applies to the brakes on your vehicle. I have found that white cars especially show this more then others :wizard:

BTW, Has anyone mentioned that you might wanna hit it with a more aggresive clay? Just be prepared to carry out a more detailed correction as the aggresive clay will marr your finish like crazy

what is rail dust??

When vehicles are transported by train, the train wheels make friction against the rails creating semi-microscopic dust particles.

It's not only vehicles transported by rail. Any vehicle that is near railroad tracks gets rail dust.

They are tiny metal particles that embed themselves in the pores of the paint!

I clayed my BRAND NEW Corvette and the claybar was BROWN after just a few passes. It was the exact color of rust.

I was amazed when I started researching this problem. I used a clay bar by Turtle wax that was at O'Reilly's Auto. I've since bought a meguiars bar to keep on hand for the next time. I always keep it clean but during the later winter time I didn't was it weekly like I always do and then I noticed it. It'll be done weekly at least now to keep it cleaner. I also used a sealer on the truck right after I was done clay barring. I'm hoping that the combination of all these issues can reduce this from happening again as bad as it was.

My wife used to have a White Grand Prix and it was covered in rail dust when we got married. This is when I actually discovered the clay bar. I believe I used the Meguiars that you can purchase in local retailers. It took a good 2+ hours, but I was able to remove 99.9% of all the rail dust, even though it had been on the car for 4 years. It was not a quick process, but it was very effective and I never had to deal with it again.

Good luck, there is some very solid advice in this thread!!
