Rail Dust Problem

I've got a nasty rail dust problem on a brand new 2008 black sports car. Looking for the best local detailer in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to assess the problem and recommend a solution. Also looking for the best autobody shop in case refinishing or repainting is required. Any suggestions?

Can you describe the problem in more detail. Or post some pics? What kind of car is it?

How "brand new" is it? Like within a week? If so, I would try taking it back to the dealer first.

Did you try detailing clay?

2500 grit sandpaper, Clay, or a rotary will fix ALOT of bad paint. Consult before painting !

Post pics, we remain in the dark without them.

2500 grit sandpaper or a rotary to remove Rail Dust? There's much less evasive ways to do this. I've never seen a Rail Dust problem so bad that it required a repaint. But, maybe it is pretty bad if you're seeing it on black? I could be a heavy industrial fallout instead of iron particle deposits? I suggest getting the dealer involved and see the process they recommend under warranty so it won't cost you anything. If that doesn't suit your needs, I suggest ging with someone on here that does these types of repairs on a regular basis.

Uploading photos failed for some reason (jpeg at 1024x768 and 140 kB). Will try to post photos again soon.

The dealer is prepared to do the repair but has managed to make the problem worse. Rail dust is still there but now there are swirls and spider webbing to boot  Therefore, I'm looking for an expert to get a second opinion. Look at the problem, gauge level of damage, provide recommendations, and possibly do the repair as well.

I wish you luck. If anyone else touches your car, make sure they only do a small section in a highly concentrated area.

What kind of car and what did the dealer offer to do for you after they made your car worse? Are they calling the problem "rail dust" or something else? Can you describe the problem in more detail?

no qustion is stupid if you need an answer, when cars are transported by trains, the train wheels rolling on the tracks generate dust that gather and stick to the cars. One of the best ways to remove this and a lot of other contaminates is with a clay bar. Hope this answer your question.

A brand new 2008 black Japanese import convertible roadster with hardtop. The dealer offered to remove the rail dust, detail and apply a paint protectant. Buffing/polishing just ground the rail dust into the paint. :nervous2: My confidence has been shaken. The entire car including all the windows is covered in white dust particles. The dealer contracted out the detailing and clay barring was already attempted.

I need a second opinion. For some reason, I'm not allowed to post photos on this site as a new user until my 10th posting

Anyone local to the Ottawa area, Ontario, Canada?

There are chemical decontamination kits that are specifically made for this. ValuGard Neutralization System Many dealers are simply clueless and contract crap detailers as well. As you know, this would have been a lot easier to fix if they hadn't swirled it up. You need to find an Autopian-level detailer to give you an estimate and make the dealer cough up the money to get it done right.

Sounds bad.

i know my mazdaspeed3 had a bad rail dust problem but nothing claybar couldn't remove.

SO what kind of car is it exactly, S2000?

I've tried searching the database, but it gives 4444 results! How does one go about finding an Autopian-level detailer in the Ottawa area, Ontario, Canada? Perhaps the car can be shipped elsewhere?

Was your Mazda new at the time?

White particles? Can't be rail dust then. Kinda seems like paint overspray. If so, it's not the dealer/manufacturer's problem. Maybe an insurance claim?

Rail dust is usually a brown/yellow color if I'm not mistaken... Not white. I agree it looks like paint overspray. White paint overspray on a black car is kinda odd though. If it is overspray and it's been on it since you got it, that's the dealers problem and they need to get it repainted.

Go to the "Forums" link at the upper left under the Porsche Autopia logo and then scroll down to the regional forums and post a thread for Canada, that is if gtpaul can't help you.
