Radiator explosion, now what?

I'm by no means saying Adam Pitale of Adams Polishes is the be all end all expert in detailing, and I was using this meathod looooong before I used his products or ever saw any of his videos... but I'd venture to say he knows a thing or 2 about detailing and he confirms what I'm saying in this video:

Tutorials - Cleaning the Motor

Well it seems my attempts of cleaning off the bumper weren't appreciated. Grandpa tells me "you're not using the right tools" Goes out there with a scotchbrite pad and has at it. Now its all scuffed up. :wall

And to think I was going to do swirl correction for him too, seems like it'll just be wasted effort.

That being said I don't recommend you try and scrub things down, or stick your hand in there while its running, but I think that goes without saying.

I don't see how you clean an engine without scrubbing it.

Let me clarify my method b/c I think you're missing me completely here:

  • Step 1 - pop hood
  • Step 2 - cover battery terminals, exposed filters, sensitive electrical components
  • Step 3 - apply cleaning product liberally
  • Step 4 - brush if necessary to break up thicker/caked on gunk
  • Step 5 - start engine
  • Step 6 - rinse completely watching for any changes in idle speed, engine sound, etc. If anything goes wrong or changes stop immediately.

NOTE: Avoid heavy streams of water into any areas that could result in a problem (i.e. - intake, plug wires, fuse box)
  • Step 7 - close hood and leave idling for a few minutes
  • Step 8 - shut engine down & open hood
  • Step 9 - towel dry or use air compressor to get residual water not evaporated by engine heat being careful not to burn yourself on any hot parts
  • Step 10 - apply preferred non-oily/greasy dressing to plastics

NOTE: Avoid belts, pulleys, or other moving parts that could be adversely affected by dressings.
