quick salt question

my car is covered in salt / road spray! the front bumper, the whoel rear, and the lower half of the doors are totally gray! (note my car is black) you can not see anything, it has gone from totally clean and shinny black yesterday morning to completly covered!

i take it to a touchless usually when i can on the weekends to clean it up (just remove the salt)

my question is what should i do in the mean time.. i dont think ill be able to get it washed until saturday or sunday.

what does the most damage to the paint. the salty roadspray just laying on there, or it laying on there while in the sunlight? i ask because i can park my car in the garage tonight and leave it there until sometime saturday when i am able to get it washed. i will get a ride from a friend to work tommorw.

They say that at temperatures below freezing the salt doesn't do much. It starts to damage when the temps get above freezing.

If you have a garage you could do a QEW wash. I would go to a pressure wash and rinse it off first or rinse with a hose first to get off as much salt as possible.

I've done a couple of QEW washes now, a 2 bucket system gave me good results. Some guys use 3 buckets. With black you can't be too careful.

I'm out of luck then. It's in the mid-40's this week, with a low of 24 tonight. if i leave it in my garage it will be probably 30-50 degrees.

i could go to the coin-op, i've never been there though. do they have the soap and other stuff you would need there? should i just use the power washer and just use a wide angle (and not that close) and rinse it off with just water?

I saw this QEW. I might have to try that out. I'm thinking maybe going to the touchless first then QEW'ing it out.

What do I use to apply the QEW? Some kind of sprayer or do I just use my wash mit and have the QEW/Water soultion?

I know there is a coin-op place somewhat nearby, although I'm not too sure of the hours. I'll stop by there around 9.30 tonight hopefully they are open. I need quarters too.

Would a good bet be to go to the coin op tonight, rinse off as much as I can, stick it in the garage, then take it to the touchless on saturday, then after that.. QEW it? I just called the only place listed at their website, and they don't carry the QEW, just other products from the company.

I'll have to order it online.

Worry about that under body too! If you can, bring two ramps to the spray bay and get the front end up high and spray the under body. If not then stick the gun under your car and spray.

The frame needs some detail loving too!

I have no ramps. I'll try to stick the gun under there. I got an "undercarriage" wash at the touchless last week, they didn't use much salt here the past storm since there was so much snow.

Back to my orginal question, with it sitting in the garage for about 1 1/2 - 2 days before i can make it to the touchless and lets say that i make it to the coin - op to rinse off the salt tonight, what can i expect? i'm not going to damage the paint am i?

if i can't make it to the coin op or they are closed what else can i expect if i let it sit in the garage for 2 days before i can go to the touchless?

the whole side is caked in roadspray/salt/slush, etc, etc.

edit: one last question, do I want to use any of the soaps there or do i just want to use water and nothing else....

and do i want to dry? i have mf towels (clean ones too) but I don't think i want to dry this off, since there will still be dirt and salt there... right ?

QEW WORKS!

I used QEW yesterday for the first time. My black Santa Fe was grey with salt from the "waist" down. We are recovering from the "Storm of the Century" here in Maryland.

I Used the two bucket system learned from this forum - and it worked just fine. To finish, I QD'd with Eagle One and the result was as if I had spent $18.00 on a hand wash. I used, maybe, $1.50 worth of materials and 45 minutes of my time.:)
