quick-megapixel digital cam everyone use?

There is no cure!
hey. quick question, hope some of u are on. how many mega pixels is ok and good for taking pics and uploading them online?

what do u guys use.

If you are buying a new camera, buy at least 4 MP. I would say if you have an existing camera 3 MP should be okay.

I picked up a Canon Powershot A95 today at Target for $330 that came with a $30 Target card. It is a 5 MP.

Kodak 6440. 4.0 megapixels. Does great as far as I can tell. Paid 350 but comes with charger and rechargeable batteries. They also give you a spare set.

thanks guys... im actually gonna buy one today. been borrowing a cam now for a month to post pics on here and now i wanna buy my own... so is megapixels exactly what i should be looking for. how bout resolution? ect. i dont know that much but i dont wanna go to bestbuy and ask the people there because they'll probably swindle me into somehting i dont need

I have a Fuji 2800 6xzoom 2.1 mp I love the pictures this thing takes. I get comments all the time.

If it will be just for uploading pictures to the internet, you can get by with few pixels. A 3 MP or even slightly less will be plenty adequate. If you ever plan on printing the photos, then go with at least a 4 MP. I use a 4 MP and if I had a printer capable of it, I could print a very clear 32"x24" picture.

Any 3.2MP or above will be enough. That said, there is a lot more than MP's that make or break a picture. Too numerous to go into here. Best to find a dealer that will let you take pictures with various different cameras. Even if you can't leave the store to do it. Try to eliminate as many variables as possible by taking the same subject under the same lighting and then comparing them. Or if you want to read what others are saying, the best place is dpreview or Steve's. Some just plain meter and focus better than others. Storage criteria can also make a big difference.
--Good luck

I've had great success using an Olympus C2100.

It's a 2MP camera but you'd never know if from the quality. Other nice features: 10x optical zoom & 3x digital zoom, image stabilization, and use it on automatic or use it like a fully manual 35mm camera. SmartCards are realtively cheap & there's lots of extra bells 'n whistles stuff available for the C2100.

As sgo mentioned, do go to dpreview.com and read up before going to the shop, have a list of cameras you might be interested in . I think a 4 megapixel camera is sufficient.

Personally I would avoid Olympus and Fuji which are using the new Xd card or even any Sony using MS stick only. Compact flash cards are cheaper and can be used in other cameras too.

Do check up prices of memory card online first and have an idea of how much they cost ;usually shops tend to hike up the prices of accessories when they sell you the camera

Good luck :)

grrr! i wish i wouldve read that earlier. i bought mine today. its a fujifilm finepix a345, i got it on sale for 199 at bestbuy. it has 4.1 mega pixels. the images look good, but i got swindled. the guy told me the cam didnt come with a memory card or batteries. so i purchased a 64mb card for 30 bucks and a 30 carrying case for it that brings 4 chargable batteries and the charger. when i came home and opened the casae it had batteries and a memory card. only 16mb card and the batteries werent chargeable. so ig uess its alright... damn sales reps!

Well since you already bought it, just enjoy it. Now go out and take pics :bass

ps: Not sure if 64Mb is enough, I got myself a high speed Lexar 1Gb compact flash at USD$79 (after rebate) online with the help of a respectable member here ;)

Fuji Finepix 2600 - 2.0MP

I know you already bought one, but here is my .02 on buying a camera (or basically anything else)

It takes great pics for whatever I've needed, and its able to take good shots for 8x10's. I can't remember numbers offhand, but as long as your camera can take pics at a resolution higher than what a certain size requires you are good to go. ex. an 8x10 needs say 1400x1400 pixels. Make sure your camera can do at least that .

I wouldn't go lower than a 2.0MP, but I wouldn't necessarily go higher either. Why pay for more than you are going to need/use? It really depends why you want it. My cousin has a 3.5 or 4.0 MP camera that he paid over $250 more a couple months ago compared to what I paid for mine 2 years ago. I found much better things to do with that $250.

Here is what you need to do. Determine why you want one and what you are using it for. See what you can get a nice 2.0-2.5MP camera for as a starting point. Then check out something in the 3MP range, see how close the price is and compare the outputs of each camera. While the 3MP might take slightly better pictures, you might not really be a huge difference given the (potential) price. If its $100 more, ask yourself if what it does is worth that $100 or would you rather have the camera that suits you fine and spend the money on other things. If it's just for fun why waste the extra money. If its to take pics to show clients, a nicer camera may be in store.

Make sure you learn how to use your camera functions too. Any camera is crap if you don't know how to take pictures properly.

Good luck.

notice how u can see the expiration tag on the license plate a little more with the 4.1mp

It is not a fair comparison. In the FujiFilm photo, the entire photo was shaded whereas in the Kodak picture, you were shooting into the sun. Any camera can and probably will produce washed out pictures when facing the sun. You can still get a half decent photo in some cases by manually controlling the camera:

Other times, strong lighting, whether from the sun or an artificial source, will wash out color and detail, regardless of camera if shooting with a bare lens.
