questions on history of clear coats

Around what year did clear coats become the standard in painting cars? I'm asking this because today I did my neighbor's light blue 1992 GMC truck. The truck had a lot of what I thought was clear coat failure, but while practicing with my new rotary, I noticed that the pad had some blue paint on it. Anyways, that white film that I thought was the bad clear coat came right out and let the trucks real color show thru. In retrospect I wish that I would have taken pictures, but at the time I thought that the paint on the truck was beyond repair.
 
I would say around '92 - '94 clears started becoming standard things. They were avalible on older cars though, I remember my moms '90 BMW had a clear.



Are you sure it wasnt just bad oxidation on the truck? I doubt a '92 GMC would have a clear coat.

for cars...most had them by 1988 ...as for trucks..there are still some that only get single stage paint and you will see color...

so don't be surprised...what shade of blue is it..? Is it the light blue metalic? ..there are other tricks for them:rolleyes:
 
I'm not really sure when they became standard. My parents had two GM products ('82 and '86) that had clearcoats, but my friend had a '93 S10 with no clearcoat. The two '80s Ford products ('86 and '89) we had were also single-stage. The '89 is even a metallic color. Any other '90s car I've detailed has been clearcoated.
