questions about pro detailing...

I'm a Minnesotan student heading back to school in Arizona and plan taking my car with me. My plan is to head out right after Christmas, and this means driving my near mint '86' Mazda Rx-7 in the snow and salty roads of the midwest. Although I have much interest in the detailing process, I never picked up the talent and have all of my spare time and money invested under the hood. The idea is to drive the car down there and have a pro detail it while i sit back and steal some tips and tricks. My main questions are...

how much should i expect to spend for a professional whole car detail with results as great as i see in the pro detail corner? (great job guys :beer )

are there any outstanding places i should look up while down there? or maybe stay away from?

what questions should i ask to assure a good "job?"

any other advice or tips would be highly appreciated.... Nick

If the outside is in near mint condition, I'll assume the inside is good too. Off the top of my head without seeing the car I would say $125-150 ish.
If all you want is a good cleaning to get the salt ect. off the car $100ish <--wash (pressure wash undercarriage!!!),clay, wax, w/ interior wipe down, vacc'ed.
I would ask to see their work as in their portfolio. If you are having swirls ect removed ask them what they use and how abrasive it is. Are they using a glaze or actually polishing the defects out. If you are going to be in Tempe (ASU) There is a shop near 40th st and indian school (been a few years I think it is indian school rd. its not that far of a drive from tempe) they have some very nice cars roll in and out of there...it is on the corner(NE) 1 building away from Petes fish and chips. Or you can ask Norah on this forum she lives in AZ I believe.

yes you are correct in that the car is in great condition for an 86, the interior is mint and there is no body damage, rust, or flaking in the paint. to my untrained eye, my paint looks to have good integrity but has some oxidation issues and just has a real foggy look to it. it does shine to an extent but does not reflect things as i would like to see it. i'm not sure if a quick buff or some wet sanding is in order but i do believe it has some life to it. actually, the institute that i will be attending is somewhat near to that indian road you speak of. i'm not sure how long it is, (could be the deciding factor) but i will definately keep that in mind. thanks

here are some half asked pics of the car to give an idea. not the best to show the condition of the exterior and to answer somewhat vague questions. they are just to give an idea,, p.s. excuse the jimmy rigged license plate and the foggy front bumper cover lenses. the plate has been remounted and lenses have been refurbished....

Judging by your pics I would charge you about $125 for a complete detail. That is by pictures alone. As long as the interior is as good as you say (im not doubting you, but ive heard its in good condition before...)
