What do you use to get the hard to reach, yet visible places clean?

There seems to be a bit of dirt sitting on top of where the valve covers meet the engine block. I hosed in there, but they didn't seem to budge. I couldn't fit any brushes in there either. What to do?

Sub topic: I saw this stuff at Pep Boys, and I'm ashamed to even ask about it on this board, but it's all I can seem to get my hands on locally. It was Gunk (Don't flame me) Citrus Engine Brite. Would this have any effect on cleaning my engine and leaving a finished look on it?
 
What's wrong with Gunk Engine Brite? I think it does a pretty good job at getting dirty engine bays clean, and I was actually turned on to it by a member here at DC.

There seems to be a rather large presumption (although it's not always spoken aloud) on detailing boards that if you buy something locally, and not over the internet, that it's a bad product. Definitely not the case. I love my "boutique" products and all, but I like products that do the job, can be found locally, and cost a liitle (or a lot) less.

There's nothing wrong with Gunk Engine Brite. I use it all the time. I think it works as well cleaning under the hood as anything I've tried. A word of caution, don't get it on your finish. It doesn't seem to hurt the paint under the hood but it will take a wax or sealant off of your paint.
 
Gunk is fantastic stuff. Works great. Just use is as per instructions. DO NOT get the Citrus one. It will leave an awful (definitely not citrus) odor in the car for weeks!!!
 
I have used the regular engine brite,foamy engine brite and the citrus engine brite and like CARTfan stated the citrus smell like s**t. Just use the regular engine brite or the foamy engine brite they works the best(I use them all the time).But neither will leave a finished look, you will have to use something like CD-2 engine detailer.
 
CD-2 is out of the question until I can find it in a store. I have never seen it. The finished look isn't a problem, I can handle that with my products. I just want something that will get the unscrubbable stuff clean.

Edit: Thanks for the info on the Citrus Brite... now it's out of the question. Haha
 
I can't find CD-2 either :(

I used some version of an engine degreaser (purple bottle, got it at Wal-Mart)and 303, worked pretty well.

CD-2 is at all the major auto parts stores in this area as well. It isn't where you think it might be sometimes. It's often times over near the spray paints & engine additives. I have hardly ever found it with the degreasers or detailing supplies.

Yeah, at Murray's its by the oil and engine additives.

That is where the Gunk products were located. I looked all over the additives. They did have CD-2 fuel additive though... or whatever it was. Sure as hell wasn't engine detailer.
