question regarding deep scratch

What is the significance of the "paintless" part of the dent repair? Wouldn't something that deep need paint?

Sorry, Noobie question.

No, good question actually. The paintless dent repair is as opposed to a body shop which uses bondo to fill and then needs to paint. The paintless dent repair guys or PDR as it is abbreviated, use metal tools to essentially "massage" the dented area out gradually. Do a search online and it is magical the work that a SKILLED PDR guy can do.

As it relates to the original posters problem, the area would still need to be painted of course, but a paintless dent repair guy will usually be able to do the painting or know someone who can, which will still come out much cheaper than a body shop.

To do it right the bumper has to be removed, detrimed, partially color refinished and then fully clear coated. I've never seen a mobile guy really do this too much. It can be done, but it's not the best way, it's the cheap way. The repair should be much less than $500.

Yeah Im really hoping that it will only cost less than 500. Do you think that they need to repaint my whole bumper for these damage? Im just hoping that they will just paint that damage but what really worries me if they do overspray my good paint. I don't really know, but I will ask them on what they will probably do!

The damaged area with get repaired and color will be sprayed on that area. Then, the whole bumper is clearcoated. They won't spray color on the whole bumper, just the repaired area. The bumper will have to be removed from the vehicle and this will eliminate the chance of overspray. Make sense?

Thank you for your clear info. I just don't know on how they do it. But at least now I know, thanks.

One more question, let's just say they insist not to spray just the damaged area but also the whole bumper, are they trying to rip me off? Shall I go and find another body shop?

Yes - They would be overcharging you. Just make sure they are giving you "partial color with full clear".

yeah wome detailers do paint touch upp also like a whole bumper for $200. so yeah investigate around your area and im sure u will find a reputable 1. ive been thinking of adding that to my shop since im auto body certified but man i hate body work. too much drama but it is good money. i saw them guys at rightlook do that in 2 hours for $200. i couldnt tell the difference.

^^^Thanks Phat... Can't wait to bring my SUV in a bodyshop to get their personal opinion on what would be the best way to do. I hope the bodyshop that Im going to does a paint touch up so that I won't get whoop in price.

Okay, went into 2 body shops yesterday to get their price and opinion about my problem. Shop A want to charge $600-650. They will take out the bumper, paint the damage, and then spray the whole bumper with clearcoat. I asked them if I can just do a touch-up paint, the owner of that shop told me I can but it will not blend good as a paint spray, which I thought it does make sense. So next I went into Shop B and asked their price and opinion about the damage. They first want me to sign some paper, which I did, so after that we went out and take a look at my SUV. The guy took some pictures of the damage and went inside to get a quote. So then he entered all the info I gave him in his computer and a minute past he gave me a whooping price of $951, to be exact. He said they would have to take down the bumper and repaint the whole bumper. Wow!!!! I thought to myself, wow that's really expensive.

Shop A had done some work in my previous cars and they really do a great job. On the other hand, I never had some work done in Shop B so not sure how good it is. Bottom line is, if I want to fix that small damage I still have to pay my $500 deductible.

Now my question is "If I have to shoulder all the bills, which shop would you guys go? Shop A or B? Which of these shop you would think will do a good job based on what I've wrote above?

Anyhow, for now I would leave the damage as is since I don't have that cash yet. Plus can't expend too much this time since my wife and I are expecting a baby these year. Thank you for any advice.

I wouldn't go to either one!! That's way too much just to fix a scratch on a bumper(unless you forgot to tell us something else). Even so, I wouldn't think about turing it into your insurance company even if you had a $250 deductible. There's not enough damage in my opinion to justify the exposure on your policy. Keep looking for a more competitive quote.

^^^thanks for your opinion. I thought it still expensive though with that little damage I have. I might go look for some detailer shop that can do a touch-ups, just like what phathooddetail adviced above. One thing that worries me by going in these kind of places is how good their work is. Just don't want to add more damage.
