question on pressure washer purchase

For use on car paint I'd suggest staying under 1800 psi. Even then, I''d not get the wand too close to the paint, especially if there is any chipping evident.

I have an 1800/600psi dual pressure unit and I typically only use the 1800 psi for wheels, and fender wells. 600 psi seems more than adequate for the rest of the car.

I would add that the type of pump is the most important. My John Deer pump is one of the best a triple piston plunge, I can also adjust the PSI.

Get a Honda Engine

Get a Triple Piston pump

Cheers,

GREG

I'm on my iPhone so I'll make it short. The pump is very important!! CAT pumps are very good. How are you going to be setting it up?

Yeah, most of the Coin-Op car wash operators use CAT pumps(I'm sure they know a thing or 2 about PWers). That's who built my unit that's been running great for well over a decade. 2 GPM / adjustable psi up to 2000 psi. I just changed over to a ceramic tip on my wand and it made a night and day difference.

What does the tip change David? How does it make it better?

Brandon1 has an old electric one that Northern Tool sells - it ain't cheap - $445.00, but it's lasted over 10 years and runs like a champ. That's my next big purchase after I pay off Christmas 08, property taxes, home owners insurance, car insurance etc etc .......

jesus didnt realize there was so much to this. well i didnt check to see what pump was on this, im sure its nothing special though. as long as this last a year ill be fine with it. then i can pick up something better. thanks for the help.

no Rotary Nozzle David ;-)

FWIW, if you are going to be a weekend warrior, my recommendation would be a quality prosumer electric variant. PSI, GPM should meet the specs but maint, upkeep, noise is considerably better than a gas unit IMO.

good thread!

Is an electric pressure washer any good? i just don't see why i should have a gas generator AND a gas powerd PW on my rig...

ide like to know as well ive always heard gas i much better than electric??

Gas depending on engine size will have more horsepower but we are talking 3K PSI and up. For automotive washing, 1800 is more than enough.

However, when you say rig, you do want gas as you are not at the mercy of a power plug. However, electric I would recommend anyday for a weekend warrior given the application/environment/circumstances of it's setup IMO. I have both gas and electric. Electric is for car washes. I like it's noise free-ness.

Gas for cleaning of the exterior of the house, etc where the power is more needed and I'm not married to ~a cord~.

The problems with using an electric pressure washer in a mobile capacity are due to it's power consumption.

A commercial grade electric PW uses an induction motor, where many older homes don't have the necessary dedicated 20A outlet available; and any noise cancellation that the electric motor gains over a gas motor is negated by the use of a gas generator.

If you detail at your home or operate a shop, and have access to a 20A outlet by all means I'd suggest electric if only to reduce the nuisance to your neighbors, employees and yourself.

I'm more or less weighing the options...why have 2 gas burning items on the truck, if i can have 1 generator to power my PW too. Not worried about noise at all. As long as the electric can move the water that a gas one can, i'll be happy.

TS -

If you're generator breaks, you are SOL.....for mobile rig, I would go with gas. My post was more intended for the OP, which appeared to by a di'yer
