FWIW: I was on Bimmer DIY the other day and accidently got on the E36 page. I was checking out some of the links and there was a link to a step-by-step of using the BMP kit. Also there was a link to removing the grey lower panel paint. It appears that the is applied on top of the regular body color paint and can be removed to expose the regular paint, which might be worth some research time if the grey really bothers you.
