Is there any pad/polish combo that can be used with the Flex 3401 that will give BETTER cut than the Meg's G110v2/MF cutting disc/M105? If there is, please let me know, as I haven't found it yet.

The Meguiar's MF Cutting disks with M105 on a random orbital (ie: NOT Flex) dual-action is a fairly potent combination that can rival the cutting abililty (in some cases exceed) of a wool pad on a rotary slinging rocks n' bottle.

I would agree with Jokeman that in many cases Surbuf pads will out cut (and more importantly out level) the microfiber pads, all things being equal. Both the Meguiar's DA MF Cutting disks and the Surbuf pads have a similar 'fingered' design that loves the higher orbital speed of a random orbital polisher (up to 6800 opm) vs the lower orbital speed of a Flex (measured max of 4800 opm if we are measuring them equally).

You could try a Lake Country Purple Foamed Wool Pad on the Flex DA, particularly if you prime the pad with M105. The Flex's forced rotation will better utilize the longer wool fibers and IME it has can cut extremely well. (I still don't like wool on a ROB, but on the Forced Rotation it really works nicely-I gave it a shot after seeing Thomas DeKany mention it several times and he was spot-on).

Did you mean the Higher speeds of a FLEX vs the lower speeds of a DA? I thought that the FLEX goes up to 9600opms?

Mark, I go with either the surbuff or cyan pad and M105 if wanting deep cut on the 3401. Otherwise I move up to the Flex Rotary beyond that.

Thanks, Todd. :autopia:

Generally speaking, what speeds with the G110v2 will level the best with the MF cutting pads and the surbuf pads?

MF pads = 4, 5, or 6?

Surbuf = 4, 5 or 6?

I believe Flex Germany uses a different measurement of OPM vs. more traditional methods. Perhaps it is industry standard when measuring forced rotation DA's vs. traditional bearing driven random-orbitals. The Flex orbits the pad ten times per rotations (measured how we would measure a random orbital) and has a maximum RPM of 480.

However the different measuring standards hardly make a difference in each machines ability, in most situations the Flex is going to deliver more swirl-busting power. However when using a finger type pad that requires more orbital motion, the ROB polishers close the gap considerably.

I find speed 5 to work best in most cases. With a larger, 6.5 inch Surbuff I will usually bump the speed to 5.5-6.

How do you prime a foamed wool pad?

Squeeze some product on it, and work it into with your fingers (like you were teasing your perm ;) ). Think of it like spreading gel in your hair (hmmm maybe not the best analogy again).

Ideally you would have a little even coating through out the pile.

Just goes to show how far DA's have come!!!

Tuff Buf black wool pads on either the flex3401 or on a PC cuts best for me. The finish is also pretty good for something that cuts so well. As Todd said, the purple wool is also pretty good but can't touch these black wool pads.

PS: love those MF discs.

Definitely not a good analogy for Mark!:rofl

Sorry Mark, I couldn't resist.

Hmm... never tried the Tuff Buff black wool on my 3401 or PC... I'll have to give it a try tomorrow. Lots and lots of RIDS to remove from this fairly hard paint I'm working on.

Are the tuff buff pads still available?

I googled them, but couldn't come up with anything.

Nice part too about the black wool pads is that they don't shed. At all. Even brand new out of the package I just spurred the fibers to fluff them up and it was good to go!

While you're at it, Mark, check out their MicroMesh sanding papers/cloths.... David Fermani introduced me to them and while I'm not too fond of the lower grits when compared to Unigrit, I really like the 4000 grit and above (they go up to 12000) for cleaning up overspray and other problems on finer finishes.
