Question about taping/masking & covering windows, etc.

After some successful experimenting with my new PC7424, an assortment of pads, and Meg's #83 & #82 on the weekend, I am anxious now to get my entire car as swirl free and shiny as my hood. But I had a question or two before I tackle that big job...

I learned quickly in my experimenting the mess you can make by not being careful and getting some product sling on glass, trim, or adjacent panels, or even getting some in the seams. What options for tape should I use (what width(s), strength, "release"?etc.). Some have mentioned 3M blue painter's tape before, but I noticed in the Meguiar's paint defects video (for example) that they used what appeared to be ordinary masking tape on one of the cars they demonstrated on.

Also, what's the best way to cover large areas like windshields, sunroofs, etc. while you're polishing? Is there some kind of disposable plastic-bag material people tape up, or do they just tape bedsheets or newspapers or what?

Thanks.

I just went to Canadian Tire yesterday and bought a roll of 3m Auotmotive Paint Tape (green colour) for this purpose. I just use cotton terry towels to cover the windshield and the rear window to prevent splatter.

I use 100% cotton king size bed sheets and just drape portions of the vehicle that are not being worked on. A must with a fabric convertible top. Slinging with a PC should not be a problem. Start a low speed 1 and increase after initial contact with surface. You can also spread the polish on your 2' x 2' work area with PC off and proceed from there.

i usually tape everything small off and then newpaperand tape for large areas since you can tear the paper to fit.... usually the blue tape 14 days safe release

Is plain ol' masking tape sufficient? I don't recall seeing this blue tape , I see mentioned, around locally

I use blue masking tape along the seams and around the trim, the 2" tape used on window trim.
