question about single stage paint.

FOr those of you who have had experience with single stage paints like the ones on old lexus's.

I just bought a 95 blk gs300 and detailed it today, spent about 8 hours :waxing: ,I got alll of the swirls out however the paint had these werid water spot etchings and other scratches on it that I coudlnt even get out. I tried everything

First I tried PC at speed 6 with cutting pad using megs 84, nothing, not even a dent. THen I used a rotary using a cutting pad with 3m perfect it 3000, still nothing.

I went over the whole car with pc and cutting pad with megs 83, that got all the swirls out...but the hood, the roof and the trunk still look horrible with all those etchings.. :mad:

What can I do to get rid of these marks....Is it possible to wetsand single stage paint? IF so should I start with 3000 grit sandpaper and buff it out?

yeah you could try a carefull sand with 2500/3000, be carefull if its your first wet sand



you may be better to settle for improved rather than gone...save some paint for next time
 
Yeah, go easy. I hear the ss paint on those is very thin, more like the amount of clear on b/c cars than the amount of paint on old-school ss cars.

Ya, the paint is reeeeal soft, the swirls buffed out like butter..But those darn waterspots that are etched allll over the hood make it look so bad..I might just keep buffing it out until they are gone....
 
I have the same problem with my Miata. It's SS and I have the spots all over my hood. I have buffed and buffed. The hood is so smooth, but those spots will not budge.

I was thinking of ordering a more aggresive compound, like hi-temp extreme and see if that would do n e thing...IM afraid those spots have been etched beyond repair... :angry
 
I'd be very careful about trying to remove such stuff; I leave plenty of imperfections in most of my vehicles as "better imperfect factory paint than a need for a repaint".



Note that when a paint is so soft that it cuts *that* easily, using a stronger product might be the wrong way to go. You're already removing paint, removing more/faster would be risky IMO.



TriZact is another of the countless 3M product lines. I haven't used it much but I didn't like the TriZact products I tried compared to the PI-III stuff.
