Question about Meg's MF cutting system....

I was excited about using the new MF system to see how it worked. I was working with the Cutting Pad and all of a sudden it blew up! I had not even used it an hour.

Also, the other cutting pad seems to be separating from the foam....is this normal?

Thanks in advance...

Spontaneous explosion?

What were the parameters you used it with? Machine, speed etc..?

Some batches of MF cutting discs have had problems with delamination. We have damaged out a few so far, but I have been abusing them myself nearly daily and show no signs of fatigue, which is weird - same batches that had some damaged out.

Let's see....Porter Cable XP...most of the time a speed 5 but bumped it up to a 6 a couple times...

It was weird...the cutting pad started to separate in the middle from the foam as well....

Thats your issue - not so much the speed 5 as much as the speed 6.

Think of all the shearing action this pad has to withstand and all the "grip"(friction) these pads have on paint coupled with the constantly changing oscillatory movement from the DA at speed 6. It shouldn't have failed, but that type of use will exacerbate any issue potential.

Exactly correct. These pads actually work optimally at slower speeds, not faster speeds. It's a complete reversal of the typical logic applied to foam or wool pads, or applied to rotary polishing.

Over exerting a MF disc will make it overheat very quickly and subsequently it will fail.

Everything I've read says speed 4-5 on the PC. I've had two disks fail, both I tried to use on speed 6. Since then I don't go above speed 5 and I've been fine

Indeed, and I am one to push the boundaries of anything thats available. I am very glad people haven't reported damage from the broken up pads like scouring paint or scratching it if they didnt react in time.

DOH, thats my problem then when I tried it out...went straight to speed 6 on a rolls royce phantom! Got almost the same marring as surbuf and 105!, but glossier paint! Obviously I didnt continue with it, but after all the rave reviews I heard about it, I was thinking it was user error....I was right!

Ya Eric, D300 and the MF system(even with using M105 or w/e polish of choice) is a Grip over "Rip" type of polishing action. Less scouring because its even "rolling" contact versuse something like "scraping" ... and I use these words lightly to get the imagination going. :)

Same reasons you finish out better with SMAT products using even medium pressure in the finishing stages as opposed to just lightening up on the pressure - it scours the paint.
