Question about deionized system

I noticed there are expensive kits to hook up to your garden hose, but what is it used for? I noticed the Mr Clean kit uses a small one to rinse the car to avoid water spots. Works ok, not great but gets expensive.

Do you use a deionized water to wash the car too? The water in my area isn't very hard about 30 TDS. (total dissolved solids)

I have to ask because I already have a RO/DI system for my fish tank which makes 0 TDS water. Very much like distilled

I also have old alchohol injection system parts to make a nice spray gun (basically like a chemical sprayer)

if I make a 5 gallon bucket RO/DI water and hook up the pump to rinse my car. I know the water leaves no spots at all. Will it work?

With my experience I would say yes. I used to clean professionally and on one job in particular I used D.I. water to rinse instead of physically squeegeeing each one. It worked great! Dried with no spots.

I also knew of a dealer that washed all their cars with D.I. water so they wouldn't have to pay their minimum wage detailer any extra time :)
