Question about 50/50's and polishing.

I've got a quick question that I would like to see if anyone else had some input on. Recently I got a call from a client who's car, I completed almost three years ago, and he's telling me a line has formed where I did a 50/50 on his hood. Well, apparently this has "developed over time" as he puts it because of course this line wasn't there when the car was finished by me, again almost three years ago.

I asked him how he took care of the car, he says he let sit over time and said the last time he washed and wax the car was about 6 months ago. Now I'm a little confused on how this could happen because from what I understand is when you polish you're leveling the paint flat and a 50/50 shot would be a leveled side vs a un-leveled side and again when you complete the panel the whole panel is completely flat and leveled.

What in the world? Anyways I'll be taking a look at this later on today but I don't know what he wants me to do for him after 3 years later.

Any input or comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.

This is what I used for the paint correction:

Paint Correction:

Flex 3401

Menzerna Super Intensive Polish

Menzerna Nano Polish

And some shots of the infamous 50/50:

I find this very hard to believe. When I do a 50/50, I always overlap when doing the completion, so when it is all said and done, there really is no 50/50. What I am getting at is when you tape up to do a 50/50 and then remove the tape to finish the other side, you don't re-tape the side you just did in the exact same spot that the tape was in, correct???? Anyway, I HIGHLY doubt it is from taping up for a 50/50 shot.

After getting some 50/50 shots and then overlapping to polish out the other side, I have seen a slight step on softer paints (Porsche.) I could only see it at specific angles with extreme lighting. It will polish out after a few more passes.

I'd be more inclined to think it's some sort of reaction from the tape adhesive then a ridge left from polishing. I would like to see pics of this when you get chance. It's definitely something worth looking into. Even if it means you re-polishing the panel for free.

Subscribed. Weird.

+1. I'm speechless until I see a photo and you figure out what is going on... I'm sure we've all polished hundreds of cars, or at least test spots, and no issue like this has come up.

Agreed. Definitely want to see a close up.

I would not worry bout it he is just saying something bout it 3 years later that is crazy. A lot of mishaps can hapen in 3 years. I could see if he would of said something with in a month or so.

I agree with Rasky.... see if you can "re-polish" the hood and or affected area(s). May not take that much effort, and for experience sake to tackle the affected area(s) and see what happens...

It looks like single stage paint, that may have some affect. I'd just hit it with an AIO and be done with it. While another part of me would be like, it's been 3 years!!!!! There was no implied guarantee, also you don't know if anyone else has touched his paint after you.

I would offer some small fee just so he doesn't think he can get over on you.

Eh, as somebody who can mothball his garage-queens for ages, I wouldn't read all that much into the 3 year time frame until you see it. Weird stuff *does* happen, and sometimes Menzerna polishes can surprise you way down the road as the oils dissipate. And hey, Arizona can be a pretty extreme environment. Maybe it really did just need a little more overlap work :nixweiss

It's be interesting to hear what Petrucci_M3 finds.

At least it doesn't sound like the owner is utterly furious or anything (I hope!).

I've had something similar occur to me. It was a Miata with soft black paint. I did a 50/50 and once the car was complete under certain light and angles you could see the tape line. I was only able to remove it with 3000 grit wet-sanding. Since then I no longer do taped 50/50's. It's the weirdest thing, but it is possible.

I have also seen this, specifically on MY Porsche. Only happens in my experience on VERY soft paint.
