Q's engine detailing on a 94 Vette??

I’m detailing a 94 Vette soon and remember seeing a thread about engine detailing. In the thread they mentioned about early 90’s Vette’s and the engine problems that developed from cleaning them. Is there any truth to this or just someone’s bad luck with to much water? I don’t do a lot of engines anymore since I’ve been doing it my self, but I done quite a few in when I was working at a detail shop and then a car dealership with maybe only one or two problems. Although I have heard many horror stories, and I guess it makes me timid being on my own now.. If anyone wants to share their methods on engine cleaning or tips on the Vette engines, as to what to cover and so on it would be great. This is a customer I know personally and already did his boat and now have the Vette and other cars to do so I really want to do the engine to really make the Vette stand out.

Thanks for any help,

I would imagine, that as long as you tok the proper precautions, you would be okay with detailing the engine. Don't get any water on places that it shouldn't go. I remember hearing about some GM vehicles being sensitive to water in the engine bay, so I would just be careful and cover things that don't need to get wet.

•Remove any excess debris, leaves and etc from the hood, grille or air-vent openings
•Spray all electrical connectors with WD40, which repels water.
•Use cling-film or Saran wrap elastic covers to cover any sensors, electrical black boxes, electrical devises that could cause an electrical short-circuits if subjected to water spray.
•This will not guarantee that you won’t cause a problem when cleaning an engine bay but it will greatly reduce the risks.

The optispark (the lt1's distributor) is located behind/under the water pump (a brownish/yellow flat plastic box), and cannot be wet. A 94 has no vent system for the optispark and are really prone to going bad when water is used around them when cleaning. Wrap that area up tight when cleaning it and you will be fine. Usually if you do get it wet, it will misfire and run rough until it dries out and you will be fine, but sometimes they die totally when they get wet.
