putting emblems back on

I removed the emblems on my car to replace them with chrome ones in much better shape. I called the auto body place to see how to stick them back on. They said 3M double stick tape, which i went to the hardware store and bought. I put them on, but the tape seems very thick, and they stick out from the car more then other cars taht have factory emblems on. Also, my 3M tape is white, and i noticed on other cars its black. It there differnet thicknesses of 3M tape?? Is there a special kind for car emblems?? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about readhering them, but I used to work in a body shop, and there was a thin layer of adhesive already backing the emblems. Your new ones didn't come backed with adhesive?

I bought them off Ebay, so they do not have that adhesive already attached. The 3M tape i have will work, i am just looking for ways that will look better (thinner 3M tape maybe??)

I would guess that you could use thinner tape, but I would look for a liquid/paste adhesive first. That should give you the thinnest coat, and keep the emblems from sticking out from the paint.

Personally I would have tried to get the emblems from a dealership. They would probably have had the adhesive on. Maybe you could find a dealership that has a bottle/tube of the adhesive you could buy?

I would have bought them from the dealer, but i called and they wanted to charge me $80 for the chrome set. I have a Acura 3.5 RL and i only have the A on the front and back (no Acura or 3.5 Rl emblems :) ). I figured buy brand new looking ones on Ebay for only $10 (a steel) is a much better deal. If i used liquid adhesive, would they ever come off again without tearing off the paint??

I can't say for sure. I can only tell you that the ones I witnessed being installed in the body shop had a pasty adhesive on the back. The tech would just peel off the backing, and slap it on the car.

I'm not sure about where (if anywhere) you can buy a liquid or paste adhesive. I would go to or call a body shop or dealership and see if they have anything though. I guess if you think you might want to remove them again, don't put them back on.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Ok, yeah i looked at the ones on other cars, and they have a double stick tape adhesive on them , but it was black and perfectly fit the shape of the emblem so it was not noticeable. it was also noticable thinner, I will contact a body shop and maybe take my car by them to have them take a look. Thanks for the help

Are you using the right 3m tape? I think they have a bunch of different automotive tapes. I've never had a problem using it, just cut to length, put it on the emblem, and then use an exacto knife to cut it perfectly around the emblem.

Where did you buy the "automotive 3M tape"???? I just went to the hardware store and bought 3M tape, its pretty thick and white. It didnt say anything about using it on cars, it actually advertised for using on picture frames and stuff. Whats the brand of yours??

I've got 3M emblem tape that is a little less than 1mm thick. PM me on how much you need as I will have to cut it to size.

I was desperate looking for adhesive, so I tried some double stick tape. I layered it to create thickness and it works just fine :)
