Purple Foamed Wool Plate Question

Well I have finally took the dive towards a rotary after using my DA for several years now. I am just getting ready to get the plate which I have decided on the 4 and 3/4" flexible backing plate so I can still use my DA's LC 6.5" pads.

My question is that on the Autogeek website it recommends the 6" BP for the 6.5" foamed wool. Do I HAVE to use this BP, or can I use the 4 and 3/4" one that I plan on purchasing?

Thanks!

I would definitely get a larger backing plate as well.

The best quality backing plate, which is also great for beginners is the Meguiar's W66 So1o backing plate as it has ample foam padding to allow for flexing of the BP, and lessened concentrated pressure on curves. I use it exclusively...

Thank you for the quick reply.

Why a larger BP for this pad only though? That doesn't leave much room between the pad and plate, something that I know there should be with foam pads...

A larger backing plate will distribute even pressure accross the face of the pad. The smaller backing plate would work. I use a 4 3/4 with 6 1/2 inch pads and it works fine. I've even used the 4 3/4 backing plate with 7 1/2 inch wool pads but they have a stiff backing.

I didn't mean to imply that it would only be important for those pads, as it applies to all pads, but now that you mention it I would say PFW pads do need it more than most. The backing for PFW is nothing more than a floppy piece of velcro...giving it no form on its own; thus without a proper backing plate it will tend to bend back and around the smaller backing plate.

I have a 2.5 and a 3.5 inch backing plate myself, and have used them a time or two when I was too lazy to swap for the bigger BP, but it was not an optimal setup.

I guess now my question would be could I use the 6" BP with my 6.5" pads or doesn't that leave enough room? If not, I guess I'm going to have to buy both BPs huh?

That's going to leave enough room?

I don't mind buying both backing plates, and I'd rather not cut it too close with the 6" BP and 6.5" pad, but if it is commonly done, then I have no problem jsut buying one.
