Purchasing PC

Hey all,

I finally decided to purchase a PC. I have a question regarding which PC is prefered; is it better to order the 7424 from coastaltool or pick up a 7336 from lowes?

Also, I have a friend who says I'm crazy and all I will do is mess up my car. I've read that it is very hard to damage paint with a PC... does this seem to be true across the board?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Haha, your friend is probably thinking of one of those professional rotary polishers! :p Yes, the PC is perfectly safe, which is why it is so popular. Click the PC thread in my signature. Inside that thread I have links to some PC introductory articles - check out both threads written by Geekysteve at the Roadfly site, they're really great.

You could buy either the Coastal kit or from Lowes, they're both good choices, but keep in mind that the Coastal kit will come with a backing plate that you could use so you don't have to find or buy one separately if that would be a problem.

I signed up for a Lowes email and received a 10% coupon. I had a friend pick it up in Delaware for no tax as well.

Once you PC you will never go back.

Awesome :shocked

This guy I know also keeps on saying:

"You have a brand new car with clearcoat on it. Why are you even bothering. You're gonna damage it!"

He's kinda weird I guess. I'm gonna go ahead and order the one from coastaltools.

It's good to hear that I can't *really* damage my paint with it. I can't wait to get it as I have a few scratches and a lot of dealer induced swirls.

IGNORE the friend. I have a PC and am know (to my wife at least) as being somewhat of a klutz. I DID NOT damage my paint in any way, even using something as agressive as DACP.

Cool. Is the PC sold at coastaltools similiar to Meguiars Electric Dual Action Polisher (also made by porter cable)?

Yes, it's the same one! DO NOT buy it from Meguiars! All you are doing is paying for two, but getting one. I've read posts here about buying it from there and then finding out it sells for a LOT cheaper elsewhere (ie. coastaltool.com or lowes).

I was worried that I would screw up the paint on cars that I detail when I first purchased the PC. I was at a detailing gathering, and someone told me just about the only way for the PC to damage your paint was to throw the PC at your car. So far, he has been correct, no paint damage, but I have not thrown the PC at my car either.

I bought the 7336SP from Lowes last Thursday for $109. I tried it out on my sons car. It worked just fine. His car has not seen wax in 5 years. I did his car from bumber to bumper in 45 min.

I am going to Dawn the car and try 3M SMR this weekend. Will use white pad to apply Klasse AIO and grey pad to apply P21S wax.

DO NOT take the thing off the car when you are done while it is running. It will sling junk everywhere! It did not appear to me that I could damage the paint. I guess if you put it on 6 and press down in one spot for a real long time you could do damage.

Otherwise my first experience is positive.

First of all, "Welcome", as I see that you're a recent additon to the site.

Glad to hear that your having fun with the PC. I'd like to make one suggestion if I could. Skip the dawn wash. This step is not needed for what products you are going to use. SMR does not require a squeaky clean surface and AIO will clean anything that's on there anyways. Just wash with car wash soap and you'll be fine.

Enjoy the PC,

Jeremy

Is the Megs dual action cordless polisher the same as a PC then? I thought the MC was variable speed but the Megs isn't or is there a corded Megs random orbital too (we only get the cordless one over here - retails for around £100)

AndyC, the Meguiars cordless polisher is not the same as the PC. Unfortunatley the PC is not available in a 240v version so they tried to compromise. Thats why i have bought a PC from the USA and a transformer to get it working in the uK :D

Cheers

Gerry

Thanks Gez. Does that mean that the Megs cordless doesn't perform as well as the PC? I would guess it isn't as powerful or flexible if only single speed action and from what I've read here & elsewhere the PC can be had for very little more even as an import. I'd be really interested to hear any other views on this before placing an order for a PC

AndyC, the Megs polisher is only good to apply a product lightly maybe like a wax etc. The PC has a bit more speed as you know so it can create a more heat, but not enough to burn the paint. I wouldnt think twice about buying a PC. Just be prepaired to wait A LONG TIME!!! It took like 2months for my things to arrive. Almost thought it was lost in the post.

There must be a Porter Cable outlet or similiar type orbital manufacturer in Europe. Contact PC and ask if they have this same model distributed ( 220v converted) under another name across the "Pond". :nixweiss
