PTCruiser Before & After with Poorboy Polish, EX & CMW

Here are some shot of a PTCruiser with the vinyl woody decal I did last week:

I detailed this about a year ago and I don't think they've done anything to it since! The whole thing was full of water spots, the vinyl was oxidized and the wheels had baked on brake dust..nothing I had would make a dent in the wheels except for a combo of P21S gel wheel cleaner and claybar, it took me about 2 hours just to do the wheels!!

I used:

claybar

Poorboys polish w/carnauba

EX

Clearkote Carnauba Moose

I applied the CMW with very little pressure, thinned with QD in hopes the PD in the CMW wouldn't strip the EX..I'll see how long it lasts.

Here are the wheels before:

2 hours just to do the wheels?!? If I encounter wheels that are that bad I just use straight acid, it comes right off.

Great job:xyxthumbs

Great Job, I have a cruiser and I can atest to the fact that brake dust is a PIA. I used A2Z but then I have never waited as long as your customer. Recently I replaced the front pads with ceramic pads.

BTW what did you use on the water spots on the decal?

TIP: Try brake cleaner in the spray can for the tough jobs and then follow with your wash.

Thanks everyone!!

I used PB Polish w/Carnauba on the door handles..it worked great for both the handles and vinyl.

The thing about the wheels is they are a chrome plated plastic face mounted on the wheels..kinda like a hub cap but permanent and didn't want to take the chance of ruining them.....any worse then they were.

I'll have to try some A2Z, thanks :xyxthumbs

I agree with you the wheels are clear coated but brake cleaner evaporates very fast. I used to wash with A2Z and then for the tough spots I would spray a terry with brake cleaner and rub. The cleaner does not seem to damage the clear coat.

BTW Thanks for your post, I can remember having a disagreement with a member who did not believe the wheels are coated.

good luck

The brake dust on these PT's are horrible. After doing this one I noticed that 90% of all the PT's I see now have baked in brake dust on their wheels.

These aren't clearcoated they are chrome plated plastic..I didn't realize it until I was cleaning them and felt the lip of the plastic on the inside of the wheel, then I tapped on it and it had that plastic hub cap sound. That's why I didn't want to try anything stronger then the P21S gel.

BTW where can you pick up some A 2 Z?

I have not noticed the plastic tip but I will check. I have had the wheels off and cleaned the inside and there is a difference between the inside and the outside. There is obviously a coating of some type on the outside of the wheel.

In any event A2Z works well but it will not remove all the baked on dust and a brake cleaner used as I described will finish the job without damage to the wheel.

good luck

Oh oh, this boy's got game. Glad you don't work in my area! :-)

It must be satisfying to see a transformation like that. Great work. Can I ask what your procedure for the tires was?

I found out from the PT forum that in 2002 the cruiser (wheel)went to a Chrome Clad II version of the wheel. Still searching for infor and I have no ideal what Chrome clad II is but I believe this is the difference.

BTW: my PT is a 2001

:up Massive improvement!

A couple points about your initial post-you said you watered down the Carnauba Moose in hopes that the petroleum distillates won't affect Poorboy's EX....but I just got a bottle today (thanks, jgv!) and it also contains petroleum distillates! Yes, I am aware that applying another product that also contains PDs may affect the product underneath, I just though it was an interesting point nonetheless! ;)

Second, on those wheels, if you run across that again and you have the regular Moose Wax, it works great on built up brake dust. I have a customer with the chrome Tork Thust wheels (5 spoke similiar to the Cragar SS wheels) that also had a ton of baked on brake dust. A few minutes with some MW and a terry cloth towel per wheel and they looked brand new again. They turned out so good that when he traded in his Suburban on a Silverado, he pulled those wheels and put them on the truck.

I take it you used Poorboys and CMW on the vinyl? Whatever you used, it turned out great!
