Protection - do QD's add, or just tread water

Hi guys,

On my car, I did everything I was supposed to put a good base on it Clay, AIO, KSG (repeat each week for 3X). Now, every week I just maintain with a good wash and QD. I used Menzerna HGAS for a few weeks, and just switched to 425. The car is garaged overnight and only driven about 2X per week.

My question is: does the weekly application of QD do anything for the base protection I had from the KSG? On the microscopic scheme of things, does the QD add protection, keep the protection level, or reduce/do-nothing for protection?

I'm hoping that by applying a weekly QD, I'm extending the length of time before I need to do a whole new run of strip down and reapply of protection. I actually find QD'ing rather enjoyable.

According to Menzerna, HGAS can prolong the life of FMJ indefinitely. I use Pinnacle Brilliance over my Souveran and they claim to extend a single application to around 6 months. I think it depends on the type of QD. I don't think a straight QD like Meguiar's Final Inspection provides any protection, but I believe many other companies create QD's that are more like part QD and part LSP and do offer protection extension.

BTW...I don't fully believe Menzerna or Pinnacle on their claims. Maybe a month or two extension...but 6?! It's aint Miracle Juice.

I use QD because I like the way my car looks right afterward. I'm not saying that they cant offer any protection, but unless someone can prove it to me.....I dont believe they add any protection.

Many do add protection. Most are formulated with polymers, which (although not as substantial as those in sealants) typically add some protection. In fact, spray sealants like Trigger and UPPS are beginning to blur the line between QD and sealant. It all depends on the particular QD, though.

Two kinds of QDs - those that add some protection (HGAS and Jeff's AG, eg) and those used mainly for dusting and minor cleaning to enhance the gloss but add little if anything to the finish (PoorBoys SW, eg). It looks like the new FK425 falls somewhere in-between.

I use the Klasse twins too and the best thing I have bought is HGAS for the purpose of extending Klasse's protection. However, one other thing I use a lot is not bought but made. I talk about it all the time here and is a home brew mixture of one part SG and 3 parts distilled water. I put it in a mister bottle (soon I will try it in a rechargeable aerosol can) and use it as a QD after each wash. It does not clean well but that is what I have the PoorBoys for. I only use it after I wash or when the truck is very clean. I enhance the shine and rejuvenate the initial application of SG each time I use it. I only apply AIO/SG twice a year so by doing this "home brew" now and then you are good for over six months (just as good as HGAS and much cheaper overall).

Thanks guys, so the line is not necessarily clear on the QD's....at least that validates my question :)

So, if I QD every week after the wash, I could probably be pretty comfortable that my protection is at least "maintained". Ya'd think that cumulatively speaking it would tend to "build up" and increase the layer over time....but then again, there's the solvents and washing so it may just be zero sum.

I love QD'ing, but dislike putting on the base protection since it's many layers over days/weeks.

I think Pinnacle's claim of 6 months refers to how long regular use of the QD will extend the life of your base coat of wax.

I use whichever QD suits the mood, and then top it off with OCW so I don't have to worry about it. It offers enough protection to use as a stand alone LSP (especially if you use it after every wash) so using it over a base coat of wax, and after QDing, seems to work quite well.

One thing you have to look out for is the alcohol content of a QD. Many QD's have alocohol in them to aid in evaporation and cleaning, making them more user friendly, but also making them a little more harsh on your LSP. Fortified QDs, even if they do have some alcohol in them, should net you at least a neutral gain and not hinder your LSP at all.

I like Griot's Speed Shine because it has no alcohol, and is very nice over carnauba, although its actual carnauba content is less than 1%. This is just my preference, you can't go wrong with any of the nice carnauba QD's.... Sonus CS, Crystal Mist, One Grand Show Off, EFCP (discontinued), Mother's Show Time, Meg's Final Touch/Last Touch/whatever they're calling it these days, etc.

Then there are the QD's that work well over everything.... Clearkote Quikshine, Adam's Detail Spray, Poorboy's Spray and Gloss, Sonus Acrylic Spritz, WG detail Spritz... the list goes on and on.

BlackSunshine: I figured that's what they meant at Pinnacle. Maybe I wasn't clear in my post. You mentioned WG detail spritz. I saw they discontinued that...have you tried their new sealant spritz?

I have not, but I understand it to be closer to a QD than a spray sealant.
