Proper rotary use

Hey guys,

I am really working on fine tuning my buffing skills and I really would like peoples opinons as to how you are perfecting your buffing patterns. I use edge pads on a dewalt. I use 6 inch pads and I have recently made the switch to using Menzerna products. Basically, I am running at low speeds to prevent any burning and I am just concerned about leaving buffer trails. I feel that you guys could offer some good insight. From steps that you typically do concerning the pads and products for diff issues on the paint I would greatly appreciate it. :bow

If you are compounding, buffer trails are normal. Polish them out and check your work in the sun or proper lighting. Do a IPA wipe if needed.

And of course practice.

What are the typical pads, speeds, and products are you using? Also, do you find yourself buffing in certain patterns? I have heard people buffing in the left to right pattern and overlaping each pass.

I like the 1Z Intensive Paste, and 1Z High Gloss Polish. The recommended speed for working these is 700-1000 rpm...nice and safe!!!

not to steal the thread.. but what machine goes to 700rpm? Mine starts at 1000.

I use mostly Meguiars (#105, #83, #80) and Optimum (Polish, Compound) polishes with the Meguiars foam polishing pads or yellow Solo wool pad, or American Buffing's white foamed wool pads. I start with a mild combination first and go more aggressive if needed, starting by going with a stronger polish or compound before going to a more aggressive pad.

I find that 3M's Ultrafina and the blue Ultrafina pad is the best way to finish out hologram free. You definitely need to use it properly-1000 rpm to spread, 1800 rpm to work in using enough pressure to lightly compress the pad for 2-3 50% overlapping passes, then back to 1000 rpm using light pressure for a couple more passes. You do have to remember that Ultrfina is not very aggressive and will not remove deep holograms. You must polish the paint enough that only light holograms are left for removal.
