Problems with Zaino on a 911

Hi everyone, I have been a long time lurker here just trying to soak up some of the knowledge in this forum. After reading about Zaino I gave it a try on my 03 black Mustang and it came out great. I also used it on two newer Jettas with the same results.l

Last night my cousin and I tried it on his 1997 911 turbo with terrible results. We washed the car, clayed it, used meguiar's body scrub, dawn washed it, and finally hit it with some detail spray. After using Z-5 pro with zfx and letting it dry for about 30 minutes we could see streaks from putting it on. Detail spray helped get the marks off, but the paint is still streaked where we tried the zaino. We put it on very very thin, dampening the detail spray to help. We even tried another coat on the hood to see if it would help, it didn't. Just to make sure we were letting it dry long enough we did a fender and left it over night, same result.

Any ideas as to why I haven't had the same success with this car? The only thing I can think of is that it is the older, neglected finish. Maybe the Zaino is emphasizing the existing swirls and marring? We did not use my PC on the car before hand because the main goal was just to get some protection on the car before the Chicago winter comes. For comparison sake I did one fender with 3M show car wax witch came out much better. I wonder if the 3M is just that much better at hiding the imperfections?

Thanks for your help and advice. Bill

You are saying you have streaks, which is different than "emphasizing the existing swirls and marring". When you say you used a detail spray before using the Z-5Pro, what detail spray? If it wasn't Z-6 or Z-8 that may be your streaking problem right there.

Which detail spray are you using?

Instead of removing with detail spray, which just adds more product to the surface usually enhancing the streaks, try using a dampened (with distilled water) towel. I have had great results with this approach and dark cars that streak. It's hit or miss with me, but the ones that *do* streak, are usally older more abused finishes...Further, those containing a very pitted surface (like a hood).

Most carnauba waxes will hide better than Z5 Pro since they contain silicone or mineral oils. If filling is what you are looking for, look into a thick carnauba paste like Collonite or FK1.

Lastly, you are driving a 911 Turbo in the winter?! :D

Thanks for the help, I was using meguairs detail spray as I forgot to order it from Zaino in time. It's too hard to let the car sit in the garage there all winter. When we get it out it is only on dry days, it just gets dusty with salt and always washed soon after. I am going to chaulk it up to an old finish that needs to be polished with a PC. I think come spring that will be the next step.

I'll have to order some z-6 before we try it again.

I would wager that the Z didn't sit right on top of whatever Meguiar's detail spray you were using. The #34 would be your best bet out of the Meg's line, as it's bodyshop safe, but you could just do an IPA wipe instead of the detail spray.

I agree. To test this theory, wipedown the hood with IPA or wash with a Z7 solution and re-apply the Z5/ZFX via a even complete coverage thin coat. The streaking should go away.

Thanks for the replies. I am 90% sure the paint is clearcoted, have to check some porsche forums to make sure. It was very humid, that's what I was thinking as well. I let the one fender sit overnight before taking it off and it still showed some smears.

I am starting to this that the clear is just in bad shape and needs buffed. In the meantime I am going to order some z6, etc. for the spring.
