Problem with Collinite 845 Leaving "Residue"

Lol... I read black car, no LSP for over a year...wow. The ColorX should clean up the paint for you, however its not going to look perfect, you might want to get Ultimate Compound and SwirlX if you really want it perfect.

Initial thoughts, SUCCESS! The gray spots all over the place are gone along with all of the cloudiness in direct sunlight. Hopefully I don't start noticing any problems, but I examined it thoroughly and found nothing.

The ColorX did make the paint look SO much better too. Took out quite a bit of swirls etc. There are still a lot of imperfections, obviously, but for my daily driver it is good for me. I remember when I did this a while ago, with the claybar and all, and was very disappointed due to the cloudiness. I guess I just used too much 845. Next time I try to do a full detail, I will probably do wash, clay, wash, colorx, wash, polish, wax.

As for the wax, I did not give it a go. The ColorX did a great job, and I also need my car for tonight, so I will hold off on the wax. Could I wash/wax it in a few weeks and it still be fine, or would I need to do the ColorX again to remove the imperfections?

Also, does anyone know the best way to get ColorX out of these pads? I've been soaking it in dawn and it doesn't seem to be doing much good...

You could try a dedicated pad cleaner such as the one from Griots: Micro Fiber & Foam Pad Cleaner, 35 Ounces - Griot's Garage

Or.. Give "Dawn Power Dissolver" a try. You can find it at Walmart and comes in a spray bottle. Spray pad liberally, work it in good and let stand for 30 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly. Repeat if necessary.

See what a little ramping up of the process can accomplish? Glad things are going better.

Yeah, probably, most people use way too much wax. Now that the surface is in better shape things oughta go better anyhow, but still try to use as little 845 as you can.

I wouldn't do the extra wash or the "polish" (scare-quotes used because "polish" can mean a lot of different things...) I'd go straight from the Color-X to your Last Step Product/wax.

If it does'nt get too dirty/contaminated, and you don't wait too long, you could just apply the wax after the next wash. If necessary, redo the Color-X, but I'd just do things soon enough that you won't have to do that.

If Dawn/etc. doesn't do it I'd probably live with the stained pads. It's usually not a problem, just looks bad. OR...just consider them a renewable/disposable resource and use new ones each time.

You all are awesome. I had tried Collinite with the same mistakes. There was a cloudy haze that was magnifying the swirling imperfections in my wife's Black Toyota Camry. Looked fine at night but by day .... booooo cloudy.

I searched and searched for a solution. Tried wax cleaners (including Collinite's) with no luck.If it did improve it was only minimal. I was discouraged, worried i had messed up the paint and a good looking car. Then I found this thread ....

..... SUCCESS! I washed thoroughly and then used ColorX. Wow. Just for good measure I finished up with a Meguiars NXT Wax and BOOM .... beautiful again. Many thanks for someone else working through this.

Maestro402- Welcome to Autopia!

Glad the ColorX/NXT combo sorted things out for you. Too bad the NXT doesn't last like the Collinite though, can't help but wonder about putting the Collinite on top of the NXT....but I bet you've already had enough Collinite-induced headaches for one lifetime!

I might be wrong, but if you used ColorX, then it just covered up your problem. Wash it a few times and those same defects will be back.

Edit: I see some of you already touched on that issue....

I don't think the OP was trying to remove any below surface defects like swirls etc. I think he was initially having issues with trace residues from applying wax on a paint surface that wasn't thoroughly cleaned prior to application of the wax. This usually causes smears. If enough elbow grease is used ColorX will remove swirls.

I personslly love ColorX's big brother M66.
