Pricing question...

Want to see people think about this situation. Had a friend of my parents on there dock want his 27' Ceira detailed. As it was expressed to me he wanted it shiny, carpets both exterior and interior shampooed and the seats cleaned. For $250. To me that was a about a right price for getting it done. I never talked with the owner, but through the week we kept playing voicemail tag.



When I got to the boat it was a '97 that had never been taken care of. Paint was kinda chalky, carpets and vinyl seats were nasty. So I get to it and it takes me roughly 7 hours to do the whole thing. On the water in a slip bigger than this boat needed. So I am playing a rope game getting it were I need without it hitting the dock.



Now after it was done I find out that he wanted it....



Washed

Buffed

Waxed

Exterior carpets shampooed

Interior carpets shampooed

Interior seats shampooed

Exterior vinyl seats cleaned



All for $250. Is it just me or is that one hell of a deal or am I thinking thats enough pay for that amount of work? Now understand this is done on the water with about a good 3 1/2 feet between the dock and the boat on each side. On a '97 thats pretty chalky. With getting it done down to the bottom paint line.
 
Don't know how to price a boat either, but I would say that's way too cheap, I normally do that kind of work on cars for $350 which are smaller.



One thing that I'd like to say is based on your post it seems as if you failed to understand exactly what your client was wanted performed and that is always a recipe for disaster. (shiny and mats inside out cleaned and shampooed is a very vague idea) You must know the full extent of the clients expectations before you ever start any work or they will not be happy after.

Yea.. I worked a contract to detail on a marina and I think we charged 450 a boat STARTING and that was with the yatchs and boats already pulled up and jacked up on land
 
A 27' boat that is chalky is almost a full week of work. I would say more like $1500-2000 would be a good ballpark for something like this for a mobile detailer, even more for fixed location. Boats are not easy and require a lot of time to do right.
