Pressure washers and wax/sealant

If I have to use a pressure washer in a pinch because I don't have time to detail my car, will it take my wax, or sealant off even if it's not held close to the paint??

I appreciate the help, I'd just like to know if I'm better off just leaving my car dirty until I can properly wash/wax it.

Thanks everyone! :grinno:

A Pressure cleaner takes off most of the dirt but not all the grime. If you are going to pressure clean it use the lest amount of pressure then do it at an angle and not straight into the paint. Best to soak the car with car soap 3M car soap is a good soap to soak with. Yes pressure will take off wax, a sealer will last longer but not for long.

I'm not sure if I agree with that. I clean my Black Audi A4 twice a week with a pressure washer (Karcher 1600 - Electric) and have never seen the wax come off afterwards. I use a wide fan and keep the tip of the nozzle 6" or more from the panels.

Unless I miss my guess, wax and sealants "bond" to the surface. Not sure how pressurized water would break that bond.

Now I could see using a PW with a very tight fan (so the water comes out like a very thin jet stream) knocking the paint right off a panel.

But then in that case you wouldn't be so worried about the wax anymore :)

Anyone else?? It's not that I would usually clean my car in this fashion, just in a jam... So I just want to know if I'm better off not pressure washing it at all if I can't fully clean my car by hand. Obviously the pressure washing will make the car appear cleaner, but if I'm just stripping off wax, maybe I'm better off waiting.

A PW is a great tool IMO becouse you remove alot of dirt without touching the paint=no swirlmarks. In the winter i always use a PW and the car looks almost clean and ready for a normal wash. It doesn't remove a wax or sealant from my experience( I live in Finland so belive me I know), strong chemicals does. I use a Sealant called Lahega 35 I'd like to send you guys an example of it, love this stuff. :woot2:

Thanks :xyxthumbs

I agree, with the true four seasons we have here in Canada we cannot always have the ideal conditions to wash our cars. PW is excellent way to clean your car witout touching the paint. I don't use soap, just fan spray at 6-8" and drive off after. My #16 coating still beads after a harsh winter and daily PW since spring.
