Prepwork for car's trip to 3 day visit to body shop?

Hey gang

My car goes in to the body shop on Monday for 3 days to repair and repaint the door.

It's not a "Hollywood" shop in that all the cars are always inside in an almost-sterile environment, from what I can tell from the one trip I made there. The driveway is gravel, and I'm guessing the cars are parked outside on the gravel when not being worked on. If they leave the 4 bay doors open then I'm sure the car will pick up not only body shop particles but also some road dust.

So.. anything I should do to prep the finish for a visit to body shop hell?

I considered giving them a car cover but think that's a bad idea, all they'll do is toss it on at some point probably after it's coated with dirt and then rub it around while putting it on or taking it off. Bad idea.

I am going to tell them to avoid washing the car before giving it back to me or doing anything to the finish on the parts they don't work on. Maybe that will avoid some scratching/swirls.

but.. should I coat the clearcoat with something to try to make it a little more durable/resistant to the crap that's going to be settling on it?

Craig, I can't remember what's on your car right now. I'd think that SG, Zaino, other polymer sealant would give you pretty good protection. I know my Zaino does the trick for me. Just be careful how you wash it once you bring it home -- being sure not to abrade all that dust and cause scratches/swirls.

After talking to Brad last weekend I ordered some Zaino for a test so tomorrow I'm going to put zaino on half and aio/sg on the other half. Once I see what I like I'll do the whole car with that method.

I'm posting another post with my test ideas to get some feedback. Jump in, please, I value your opinion highly.

When I took a car into the body shop to be painted(whole car), I did a lot of the "prep work", to insure the best results. I removed the door handles, locks, belt molding, interior trim by the door opening, the plastic vents on the door jam, and the door panels(interior). I CLEANED the door jams, under side of the doors, trunk sealing area, under the hood. I pulled back the weather strips and removed all dirt. I didn't want any "hidden" dirt, to be blown around, and spoil the job. The Painter was "blown away", by all the work that I saved him from dealing with . Rather than "hope" they would clean everything first, I knew it was clean.

wow, thorough job. What did you have done? As I described the place, I'm less concerned about bringing in my own dirt than I am over collecting it while it's there....

I would just wash it really good with dawn, including the door jambs. Give it a coat of cheap wax, then wash it when you get it back and clay the car (except the freshly painted door)
