Prep for Platinum UPP

The first 60 degree day I'm going to attack my black Santa Fe. I have a Wal-Mart Special 6" orbital with terry and MF bonnets. I intend to use Platinum UPP.

I have those tiny "spiderweb" swirls from car washes. Not severe, but I want to make the paint as nice as I can.

Some Questions:

What is the best product to use to fix the "spiderwebs?

Can I use this product as a base for UPP?

Will the Platinum Pre-Cleaner so the job?

I know that the Wal-Mart Special is a toy, but what bonnets would you suggest?

I really like the UPP. Do I have to change?

Please help!

Test an area with the Platium polish. If that alleviates the spidering from washing to your liking - great. I would try the polisher ( 100 % cotton terry) but your best results, because of your tools available, would be by hand. Make sure the spider-webbing is not the normal characteristic markings of most "black" painted vehicles ( make sure the defects are in the clearcoat).

If the Platium polish is not strong enough try some 3M Perfect-It II or III. If this works follow up with the Platium polish to enhance gloss.

I personally perform an extra step by using a very mild paint cleansers. There are 2 that seem to work with sealant ( BFII & EX) similiar to Platium. They are P21S GEPC and Clearkote Vanilla Moose (VM). The VM seems to have less oils for filling defects and will probably not effect the Platium bonding. VM from my initial usage is great with minor clearcoat spider-webbing. The same goes for GEPC with my trials with Blackfire II and EX ( experimental polymer resin sealant with carnuaba).

The appearance of your finish should look like what you desire prior to application of any protectant. Especially sealants. So if you have a warm day prior to your complete endeavor, try this logarithm.

Hope this helps

Hiya Ray,

Some good products to try for light spiderwebbing are;

P21s GEPC, Vanilla Moose (see some recent Scottwax posts), Meg's Swirl Free polish or Meg's #9. All of these work very well by hand. Lots of people here like the 3M SMR but I've read it doesn't lend itself to hand application and the Al-Mart orbital may not be strong enough to really work the product.

After using any of those polishes you'll need to use a paint cleaner like the Platinum Pre Cleaner (super mild and good for well maintained finishes) , Pinnacle Paint Cleaner or AIO (my favorite). This will remove any fillers or oils left behind by the polishes. Also, a wipe down with a 50/50 mix of isopropyl and water will also clean up the paint and get it ready for the UPP.

I think I recall Scottwax saying the vanilla moose didn't require the need for a paint cleaner step when using a polymer or acrylic sealant but I'm not sure. Anyone?

Pretty much everything I mentioned (withthe exception of the 3M SMR) is very easy to use by hand, especially the UPP and Platinum Pre Cleaner.

I think you'll really like UPP.

I have applied BF II and a experimental polymer sealant (EX) over both GEPC and most recently Vanilla Moose (VM)( VM + GEPC + BF II= no problem: VM+GEPC+EX = no problem). Seems to work well in terms of appearance and compatibilty. Will this lead to any decrease in strengh of bonding?:nixweiss. My cars normally never go beyond a month without re-application so I personally will not be able to answer that. Anyone?:wavey
