Powerwasher pressure

What is the recommended pressure for power washing a car's exterior that is sufficient for getting the grime off the body and rims, without doing damage? i've used the karcher power washer from home depot, and its been working ok.

I think mine is like 1750 psi, but it feels like its not as strong as it use to be, I'm not sure what's going on with that.

Some people may disagree with me on this, but I'm in the pressure washing business. I have a 3500 PSI / 5GPM machine that gets up to 200 degrees. That’s pretty much overkill for cleaning the tuff stuff off of cars. However, regardless of what machine you have, you can use a 40 degree tip and by increasing the distance from the surface, the pressure drops off considerably. In my business, you learn how to vary your pressure using this technique. Another technique is by knowing how to read a nozzle chart. You can take any machine and decrease the pressure by increasing the orifice size of your tip. If you know anything about washers, don’t adjust pressure by cranking the unloader valve. This effects the flow or GPM of your machine. You want to have a tip that reduces the pressure while maintaining maximum pump flow.
