powder vs liquid detergent

I know everyone prefers liquid detergent because they feel that the powder might not break down in the wash and stick to their towels. However, I use Tide powder specifically for my car stuff because of this article I read from the North Face clothing gear website. North Face knows cloth and clothing, and you all might find this excerpt interesting.

"Be sure to zip all zippers, and close all Velcro® fasteners before you wash your jacket. Please use a mild powder detergent. Liquid detergents can leave a residue on your jacket that will interfere with the DWR performance. You can wash your jacket in a regular washing machine, in cold water, on a gentle cycle. Put it through the rinse cycle twice, to be sure the detergent residue washes out. You can dry your jacket in a low temperature dryer, and if necessary, use a cool iron. Do not use bleach or fabric softeners, dry clean, or store when wet. (top)"

A lot of people have talked about residues on their towels, and about using 5 or ten rinses. You might want to check out using a powder like Tide, which is supposed to be pretty good. I like it.

Only time I know of when a powder detergent is called for is when washing a Weathershield car cover. Instructions advise against a liquid.

pocon1, if you insist on using a powder for your towels, Tide leaves residue. They use fillers, and that's why the scoop is so darn huge (yep, even the "concentrated version). Try a detergent called SA8 with Bioquest, sold directly by Quixtar distributors (formerly Amway). Zero fillers, pure detergent, and the scoop size is less than 2 tablespoons. If you dissolve a teaspoon of each side by side in glasses of cold water, you'll see what i mean by Tide residues - it doesn't completely dissolve! And no, I'm not trying to sell you soap here. There ought to be a rep somewhere in your area.

Me personally, I keep the powder for my clothes and my MFs get the Woolite treatment. On "Intermittent Agitate". With an extra rinse.

If you are interested in another non mainstream brand of detergent ( sorry no powder) try Melaleuca Mela Power. Really great stuff :up

Ok, now that you've opened up the can :) would you care to elaborate? I know what Melaleuca Alternifolia is, but I've never heard of the other.
