1. Find some competent help. My kids have helped me the last 4-5 years in the summer but now that one is about to go into the air force and my younger boy is in his last year of high school and planning on college in Kentucky, I probably won't be able to rely on them to help out much past this July. I'm looking for someone with a good work ethic and preferably, no detailing experience. It is easier to train than to retrain.

2. Tighten up my pricing a bit more. Still overworking/under bidding on some jobs but it is getting better.

3. Bring my website out of the 90s and into 2007.

4. Look into the viability of adding windshield repair and maybe minor interior repair.

Scott, contact me. I sent you a eamil in reguards to your #1.

Josh, joshuaottmann@hotmail.com

thanks.

I'm going to be new to the business. It's just going to start as a side job hoping to do around 4 cars a week whether it's a full detail or simply a wash.

I've been doing this for about 8 months now and talk about wearing me out......but the extra money is great.:spot

I'll be taking it full time this year as soon as I buy a nice truck. :getdown

2007 is going to be my second year detailing for customers.... I spent most of my profts in 2006 building my supplies and tools. I spent quite a bit of money and at the same time I honed my skills... Im a very very quick learner and Im always looking to get better, there is ALWAYS something new to learn.

Now that I have my supplies in order... all my tools ready to go... and a really nice client base Im ready to really rock and roll for 2007. It seems Im kicking off 2007 strong already, I just finished my first car of the year.. I have 2 scheduled this week, two ready for this up coming weekend, and just picked up another for the following week. I currently only detail on the weekends but I have a customer that buys and sells cars and the two this week get to stay in my garage and worked on on my own time, which is pleasant.

My goals this year are as follows....

-Double my 2006 profits.

-Expand to RV vehicles and boats.

-Retain my current customers for regular maint.

and last but not least....

-Customer appreciation gestures.

I plan on having a couple BBQs this year for my customers, with the invite including bringing a friend... with giveaways at the functions. While at the functions Im planning on sharing with the customers tips on keeping their cars nice between details, new products coming out, and demonstrations. Im also planning on building a reminder database so I can snail mail and email my clients when their vehicles are due for a followup. Customers that refer new customers to me will get their choice in free upgrades on their next detail or things like QDs and MFs.

Im having a lot of fun with this.. and hopefully someday I can actually do this full time.

Id also like to take this opportunity to thank you guys for making my 2006 (first year) a fun and educational experience. People like you guys and places like this (Autopia) are one of the reasons Ive had great success. THANK YOU! :waxing:

-Nick

I too am going to focus more on the high-end auto collector market. Theres seems to be less haggling of price and more appreciation of work with this clientle.

How do detailers attack this area and find the customers?

I'm also going to have 10 T-Shirts, 10 Polos, and 10 Hats made with my logo to match my truck. I think this will appeal to high customers as well. Uniform look. I will also be confirming and scheduling appointments through e-mail and text messaging to better guage my weekly and monthly booking.

Please comment on any of this......

What I do after a booking has been made, I follow up one week before, one day before and then right as I am leaving for the appointment. this way the client is confident I will be there and I know right away if there is going to be a cancelation. After I am done polishing a car I send the client an email with a link to leave me any feedback they would like. In the same email I make a recomendation of when thier car should be serviced again and then I follow up a week before then if I have not heard back from them. It makes manageing myself in reguards to time a lot easier.
