Possibly the scariest engine detailing advice I've seen:

I agree completely, and thank you for actually commenting on the erroneous parts of his method.

You said its not elitist to correct the misguided, but I didn't see any correcting going on, just the usual point and laugh.

I guess maybe we just take it for granted that the people who will read our comments understand why its bad. Maybe we take too much for granted sometimes. Your point is well taken though. :xyxthumbs

Well let’s see where to start......

If you look at his pics, the after shots do not look to good; I see that his hoses and other rubber, plastic parts look spotted. This is not the look I am going for, so to me that is a bad start before I even read about how he was doing it. Next as Jnger said I wouldn’t SPRAY water on any motor, maybe I just know how an engine works, but I would never do it. Next he says to "Start the car and drive it around for a few minutes until the temp gauge is about halfway warmed up. Not fully hot. Pull back into the driveway or wherever you wash your car. Open the hood and absolutely soak the entire engine compartment with Armor All. Everything. Paint, wiring, engine, everything." I have sprayed "dressings" on metal and painted surface’s and it didnt work out to good for me, also in the same breath is the wiring comment, If you "absolutely soak " all the wiring this could cause a number of problems, even if the "dressing" you are using doesn’t short out any of the connections it will make all the dust and dirt stick to all of them, this also go's for all the "painted" and metal stuff under the hood. The "dressings" will not soak in to the Metals then dust and dirt will stick them as well. Then the next step he says to dry everything off, with a towel in the morning, which is good but you cant get it out of all the nooks, crannies… BUT! then he says to blow it out with a air hose, which in turn will blow dressing all over your windshield and fenders.

In my eyes I don’t think his way of detailing an engine is too good, but this was just my 02$

I wonder what he means by that. My temp guage says half way to Hot all the time. :D If his car gets all the way over to the Hot side when he drives then he has got problems. I wonder if he meant just till the needle moves up a quarter of the way...?

Is it just me or does that strut bar look a little messed up? I can't tell if its aluminum or not but it looks like it got degreaser all over it and sort of ruined it. Maybe its just the light. I've seen what degreaser will do to aluminum wheels and that strut bar seems to be showing signs of that kind of thing.

Sooner or later this guy is going to have someone tell him that his motor is hosed. My guess is that he won't quite understand what they mean by that...

Not that kind of hosed, silly...! ;) :D

Now that is the kind of hosed I'm talkin about! :D

meaning halfway to operating temp. (example, mine reads 210 as full operating temp, halfway would be 150 by my gauge.) ;)

LOL Jngr! :D

Besides the bad instructions, it's a waste of Armor All which you'd have to go out and buy every time you do this (and then proceed to rinse most of it off). I'm just left wondering where the heck this whole idea even came from, so I freely admit I DO point and laugh! :p

Jngrbrdman,

:nono (j/k)

That's HILARIOUS!! ROTFLMAO

just wondering, but why is it bad to spray stuff on the valve cover? it's pretty sealed from what I read.

Seems to me that Ford put out a TSB about sensors being poisoned by silicone spray in the engine compartment. And they were no longer going to pay for replacement under warranty.

Has that been corrected? Is Armor All now using 'good' silicones? Does it make any difference? Am I drinking too much coffee? :shocked

The previous owner of my Alfa used to wash the engine in the same manner. This caused me a great many problems. The rubber seals around the electrics cracked allowing water etc to get in (rust on most connectors). Many of the metal clips were rusty and would just brake if you tried to undue them. The Airflow meter had rust in it. Many switches needed to be replaced (ie throttle switch). The list goes on and on.

It cost a lot of money to fix these things and still I get a lot of problems with the engine.

Think twice about soaking your engine with water or any other stuff.

Correct you are! Water based dressing made with polysiloxane silicones (the good kind) are fine but any solvent based dressing or dressing containing dimethyl silicones are very bad and will contaminate the sensors and be a huge headache.

From what I understand, Armor All discontinued use of these silicones years ago after the whole "Armor All will crack your dash" rumours were flying around.
