Possible to use full size carpet cleaner?

I thought a thread of cool Christmas presents would be appropriate. And not just detailing related.

For those of you who are considering buying or or getting an XBox ,you have to get the Gotham racing game. Very very cool and addictive. I have just worked my way up to the Porche Boxter (after getting a Super Beetle and BMW Z3.) This game is a blast and fun to play with 2 or more players, but is best played mano-a-computer. I also like the Madden 2001 football game and of course Dead or Alive 3 (an awesome fighting game that is, shall we say, easy on the eyes.) Any kid would love the XBox. Even if you are a 40 year-old kid. The XBox will cost you about $570 by the time you buy three games, an extra controller, Monster AV cables for S-Video, and a DVD controller kit. Hey, it's only money.

If you have a friend who you may suspect is a closet detailer, how about the basic Blackfire kit (or even the full kit with PC if they are a really really good friend (show this to your wife)) You could then include a coupon good for one free detailing lesson.

I'm sure ya'll will have some other good suggestions.

I've been thinking about buying one or two of these for the garage as a Christmas present to myself. Then I won't have to use the propane heater anymore.

My wife buys everything else I just have to get something for her. :up :)

Monster cables are a big rip off. Go to radio shack and get their gold series cables for under 1/2 price of monster cables. I saw an audio cable with 3 RCA jacks for 20 bucks, and the same cable repackaged as component DVD cable for around 70. RIP OFF.

I am thinking of an MP3 player for christmas. THAT IPID is awesome....too bad I don't have a mac....

Short Cut,

I have been thinking of getting a couple of those too. I have seen them for around $50, I have heard they work pretty well. :up

I have been thinking of the Playstation 2 for myself ... er my son, since I er he already has the original.

I will probably buy myself a Widescreen HDTV formyself this year. I need one real bad.

Oh everyone here can send me MFs for XMAS I would appreciate it.

Hmm that first one was $70 but they show one just like it for $50 at This Link.

Short Cut,

It does not really look like there is much difference between the two, especially for $20 more. Prices can really vary on heaters like that one. I have seen them from $50 all the way up to $110.

I like buying stuff for me for x-mas and birthday (next month). This year for x-mas i'm getting a digicam. Best Buy's having their preffered customer weekend friday (10% off items over $399 with 18 months interest free financing) For my birthday probably a new cell phone like this one that I can check my orders during the day and stuff. Hey it's better than two years ago, when I bought my car for my birthday ;)

Oh yeah, and I get cool stuff for my family too.

Those garage mats from AutoBarn that everyone was talking about a few months ago would make a nice gift for a car nut. They have the same mat at Sam Club for cheaper, and it the exact same thing. Would be nice for that hard to buy for car person on your list. :up

I agree that Monster Cables are usually way overpriced. But get this. The only gold-connector cable available for the XBox with S-Video was from Monster. The XBox has a unique connector at the box, and RadioShack doesn't make one yet that I know of (I did buy a gold-series RCA-audio cable extension there for use with the Monster Cable as the Monster cable needed about 8" more to make the connection to the back of my receiver (their S-Video/RCA splitout was just too short.) And at $40 I didn't think this particular Monster Cable was too high. It was a 12' long, also. The el-cheapo S-Video/RCA/XBox cable they had next to the XBox display was like $25 and wasn't gold. I had an interesting time hooking up the XBox as I had to almost rewire my entire setup because my receiver was just about all used up. I just have too darn much stuff in one cabinet, including now two DVD players (XBox does this also), VCR, CD changer, Surround processor, DirectTV, XBox, and Technics 600W receiver/amp w/THX 5.1 surround speakers and 44 inch TV.

I used to work for a MilSpec cable manufacturer when I was doing my Electrical Engineer thing. Cable quality does matter but you don't always get what you pay for. I try to get the "middle of the road" quality usually. RadioShack is pretty good for that.

By far the best, most realistic (in both gameplay and graphics) is Grand Turismo 3 for playstation 2, its a blast (and am not that into video games anymore) and the graphics are as close to photo realistic as you can get. As far as cables, for video games, go with radio shack. After setting up many profesional home theater systems, i can attest to the differences in cabling, they are the arteries of your system, and we all know the affects of cloged arteries, whcich are similar to bad cables. Moster has some solid produts (speaker cable is lackluster), but the differences are more subtle than the differences between two different speakers ect. As for christmas, i am waiting for my first car. I have made quite a btit of money from detailing and the 'rents are willing to help out quite a bit. My dream car, and hopefully reality car is the future nissan z.:D

I got a new book bag. My jansport served me well for 5 years, a Big Kahuna had like 2100 cu. in. The zippers dont zip now sometimes. Sometimes it would zip, but then other times it would not. The cloth is still in great shape though.

To replace it I went out and bought a North Face Big Shot, 2300 cu inches I think. 38L for outside USA members. A very good pack. Beefy zippers, compression straps. Its even more comfortable than the Jansport. I expect it though, paid double over the Jansport ($40 vs. $80)

My parents also loaned me cash to get a new computer. I paid $100 back, so the balance due back is $400, and its interest free!

I bought the parts and put it together myself.

1. 7 bay Case (w AMD approved power suppy)

2. Soyo Pro Mother board

3. AMD Duron 800 Mhz processor

4. 256MB RAM

5. Pine GeForce2 MX400 64MB video card

6. 56K modem

7. 40.9 gig Maxtor 7200RPM hard drive

8. 16X DVD ROM

A big improvement over my old computer, a Pentium 133 Mhz, with 28.8 modem, 48MB RAM, 1 gig hard drive, generic video card, and 6X CD ROM.

Existing parts, are 17 inch monitor, 5 speaker system, Epson 640 printer, and keyboard/mouse.

I plan on getting a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 PCI sound card upgrade for my new PC.

Thats it for my christmas so far. I will be getting some new cloths and such.

Happy holdiays Autopia,

I came up with an option-you would think that a full size carpet cleaner from Hoover or Bissell would have more suction and more power than the Little Green Machine. Granted, you can't use the main brushes of a full size machine, but you do have the hand held carpet cleaner brush, which I would think would have more suction power since it's hooked up to the larger machine. Plus the full size machine doesn't really allow you to use it as a mobile detailer, but if you work at a shop or at home, could this be an idea for someone, or am I off target?

I haven't used the hand tools on the Hoover full size yet, just upright on the house carpets. Seemed to me to leave about the same level of dampness as the LGM when I used it for some spot cleaning. I don't think I'd recommend going for a full size if you already have a LGM unless you want it for larger jobs around the home.

Would you happen to know the amps on the suction of your upright? I looked at two Bissells yesterday, and one had 6.5 and another had 12, while the LGM comes in at 9.5. It all depends on what machine you get, but then again I don't know what the difference 3 amps makes in suction power.

Model on the upright Hoover is the F5914900 Steam Cleaner rated at 12 amps. "Steam" Cleaner is a misnomer bordering on false advertising, IMO. There isn't any "steam" involved. They recommend hot tap water and the machine has no heating capability. When I know I'm gonna be cleaning carpets I crank my hot water tank up to the max, it makes a big difference. Especially when you forget about it and step into the shower and get your carcass broiled! :(

I think it is possible to use full size carpet cleaner. It is up to you how you will use the carpet cleaner and how it really works on your carpet. You just have to understand very well the proper procedure in cleaning the carpet.

I tried our Bissell hot water carpet cleaner using the attachments and it worked well for awhile, but it always left the carpets too wet, and it was hard to get the soap out of them completely.

The Amps is just the amount of electricity the motor requires, so the more amps, the bigger the motor, which should give you more power to run the vacuum that powers the brush attachments.

If it has a number for water lift, that would be good, and the higher the number of water lift, the better it will be at getting all the moisture you put into the carpet out, so it will get more dirt and soap out, leaving you with cleaner, better smelling, better feeling carpets..

Since then, I have learned that the carpet soap you use should be something on the order of Meguiars low foaming APC+, which works excellent on most stains, etc..

I eventually got tired of dragging this Bissell thing outside, so I ended up getting a real carpet extractor - a Mytee HP60, and this bad boy positively cleans and extracts almost all the moisture out, so drying time is way better and the carpets always come out beautifully.

So, the carpet cleaner will work on some things, as mine did, and if your priorities dont call for more power, hotter water, and 137" of water lift, then you will be fine with what you have; even with all the attachments, it will just not be able to do as good as a full blown extractor - its all up to what you want to do with carpet cleaning, cloth seat cleaning, etc...

Another possibility to think about - a Steamer which can clean all the hard and soft parts including leather really nicely, and not have to rely so much on cleaning solutions, etc.. These are way cheaper than an HP60 Mytee machine and I believe it can also do great work on carpets as well...

Good luck with your search.

I finally got around to using the hand tools on the full size Hoover. A bit disappointing. The LGM actually works better on small jobs or in tight places. The suction on the upright is excellent but a bit lacking using the hand tools. YMMV.
