Porter Cable Virgin

Hello Everyone,



I finally got my porter cable and have no idea how to start using it. I will be working on my friends black VW GTI 1.8 turbo. I think his paint does not have any clear coat. He have a lot of scratches and fine scratches on the car since he's been using old t-shirts to dry the car after washing and been going through a lot of automatic car washes. I will be using DACP to prep the paint, then Klasse AIO, followed by Klasse SG, then Waxing it with either P21S or Meguire's Hi-Tech Yellow wax. Any suggestion on what speed should I start with the DACP? Klasse AIO? Or any suggestion what other product might work with his car. I tried to clean them before by hand and it was hard and the stuff I use work a bit but not fully since I guess I was applying it by hand. The PC should help a lot now I think?

What year is the GTI.. most new black VW are base/clear. If you gently rub a little DACP on it with a rag and the rag comes out black .. its single stage .. if it doesn't .. its base/clear.

to eliminate swirl marks I was wondering

if you or any other members have any

thoughts on the Makita 92276C. Would

it be considered overkill at $60.00+ over

the cost of the PC? All comments greatly

Welcome to Autopia. You folks just getting started with PCs will find that a little experience will go a long way.



Ricky- Even the DACP might not be aggressive enough for the black VW. Be sure to work the DACP a LONG time, until it disappears/turns to powder. People USUALLY underestimate how much/long they'll have to work the paint with the PC, especially the first time they use it on a really marred up vehicle. Don't get discouraged if it takes a LONG time (at speed 6) to make any meaningful progress.



Couper- Assuming the 92276C is the Makita I'm thinking of (namely, a rotary polisher), *I* think you oughta get some experience with the PC before adding a rotary to your arsenal. I sure love MY Makita, but I've used a rotary before and I've used PCs/Cyclos regularly for about 20 years. It's sorta easy to make a BIG mistake with the rotary, it's NOT easy to make a BIG mistake with the PC (but it's sure not impossible). You'd still want to have the PC for things the rotary isn't suitable for anyhow, so I'd work on mastering IT first.

BY the way, my ride is a 2003 electric red

330Ci and of course the swirl marks were

not an option I had chosen but the dealer

did include them at no charge!

Jesstzn, the GTI is 2001. If I remember when I did the car the first time I did not see any paint on my mf towel. You got a nice car. My friends GTI also is somewhat modified. Bilstein shocks, neuspeed springs, neuspeed air filter, neuspeed sway bars, APR chip, borla exhaust, RO_JA formula 7 rims.
 
Hi Couper & welcome. This is totally off-thread (for which I apologise to everyone) but the spelling of your surname (if it is your surname) intrigues me as I am also a Couper not a Cooper.



Do you have any English or Scottish relatives?
 
I just placed my orders for the 7424 and the Menzerna starter kit. I've got a black 04 WRX that I have made some major mistakes with this winter. How long will it take to get used to the new methods? I don't want to jump in on my own car and have a few people that wouldn't mind me doing their cars as practice; a burgundy Malibu, a silver Taurus, a red Explorer and a black Alero. I'm figuring I'll do the Taurus or Malibu first, then the Alero, then on to my car. I've been reading all day and can't wait to get started. Might be a few weeks as the weather is still hit and miss here in Michigan. This weekend would be perfect, but my PC won't be here till late next week.



Not sure how I'll finish any of my "practice" jobs. I've got Klasse twins, P21S, and some Zymol from my pre-Autopia days. Maybe I'll use some of that up on the first car. My car will get AIO, SGx3-5 and P21S.
 
randy98mtu- I predict you'll get the hang of it in no time. If anything, you'll find the PC isn't as aggressive as you expected, or even as aggressive as you'd LIKE. But actually DOING the cars can take quite a while, especially if you have some serious marring to remove. Allocate plenty of time.



FWIW, I hear the clear on black WRXs is a bit softer than that on my silver one. Shouldn't be too hard to get the car looking nice. And *I* use the AIO+Sg on the black plastic trim on the WRX too. Lasts forever and doesn't wash off like ERV dressings do. I use the "Bill North" method for the trim, though I let the SG set up on the painted parts of the car.
 
Thanks Accumulator. The car looks pretty good at a glance now, but if you start looking at it there are scratches in the clear all over. A few I can feel so I'm a bit nervous but I'll just take the prescribed route and see how it comes out. Hopefully that soft clear that is easier to screw up is in fact easier to fix too.
