Porter/Cable Alternative

After one year and one month my P/C quit working. One month out of warrantee! I used it maybe 20 times. UGH Well I went to Lowes and they did not have any new P/C's on their shelves. Went to Home Depot to see what they had and no P/C's! So looking around, I found the Rigid model R2610 Orbital, Variable Speed Sander. It comes with the 6" Velcro backing plate. I was a bit leary, but the salesman said if I wasn't happy with it I can bring it back, no questions asked. I found that the Rigid has it all over the P.C. It is a better made tool, quieter, and motor is stronger. It's a bit heavier than the P/C, but it is balanced much better. The Rigid cost 129.00, but with the backing plate already installed, to me, the Rigid is a better buy. Just thought you'd all like to know.
 
is the backing plate removable like the PC? Does it have threads in the center that you can attach other accessories?

Sounds interesting.
It draws more amps so theoretically it should develop more power. Either that or it is much less efficient and I doubt that is the case.
The speed range of 4,000 to 10,000 orbits per minute might take some getting used to. With that kind of power and those speeds, some serious paint correction should be possible. It might also be possible to do some damage unless you spend some time learning to use it properly. Not like a rotary, but maybe not quite as foolproof as the Porter Cable.

I used it today on two vehicles and it was great. I used it with a finishing pad and used it to apply wax, the speed on the low setting and it worked just fine. The Rigid is better balanced for me, so it made the job for me easier and faster than when I used the P/C.

The backing plate is held on with a counter sunk allen head screw and it is removeable. Since I haven't take it apart yet, I'm not sure if the standard pad backing plate will fit. This weekend when I'm out in the garage again, I'll check and see.
