I'm shopping around for one and I noticed thier are some that are cordless. Are they worth while? I live in a condo so I really need portable I don't always have a outlet handy. I'm not looking to spend alot for a vac, but I don't want something with crappy suction.

Maybe something like this. I have never tried it or seen one but it gets some good reviews.

It appears that the Shop-Vac unit has been discontinued.
The DeWalt gets a good review, but I have a tough time believing it has as much suction as a corded 5 hp unit.
It would be worth trying if you can buy it someplace that will let you return it if it doesn't meet your needs.

I had one. I bought it at sears. Cost me around 40 bucks. It was a craftman 5hp Vac n Carry.

I have it away though.

Now I have an equally small vac with the blower too! 5 hp and around 4 gallons. Bought it at the Home Depot for 70.

The ones you refer to are great vacuums, but require 110 volts.
Lone wolf is looking for a cordless.

Almost forgot.
Don't bother with the Ryobi Wet/Dry Hand Vac.
It doesn't have any more power than the B&D Dust Buster.
Battery lasts much longer, but I consider it a waste of money.

Missed that part. Why not buy an extension cord? Or do you not have outlets in your home?

FWIW. My daughter owned a town house for a couple of years and the parking there was about like it is in most condominium areas here. She had a garage and driveway, but anyone that didn't have a garage could very easily be parking a block away. You would need a loooong extension cord.:)

Just a thought. Would a gas generator be a practical solution? You could power all sorts of things.
Woops! Where would you store it. :wall

I'm not looking strickly cordless. As a matter of fact I didn't know they had cordless shop vac's I thought just hand-held. I have no parking garage just a open parking lot, I can however run a extension up stairs. I'm guessing I'm gonna have to spend between $40-$60 for a decent shop vac.

Both Sears and Home Depot have 5 HP units that are very powerful as well as compact.
The Sears one is $69.95 and you can get 10% of by using your Sears credit card. You can find it here.

Home Depot has a Ridgid Model WD4050 for $69.95 and I'm not aware of any sales on it.

Just my opinion, but if you are considering spending $60, then go for the extra $10 and buy one of these. You won't regret it.

Keep your eye out at Sears then i recently picked up a new 4HP 9 Gallon for like 39.00 since it is year end clearance time and they are making room for the new models. My Craftsman Shop vac that i have ahd for about 15 yeasr finally is starting to take a dump.

Anyone own the compact Metro Vac? From the numbers they seem to have excellent suction, but I can't find the tank size anywhere. Anyone know the gallon size on it?

1. I have the Metro Vac-N-Blo and you are right, it has plenty of suction. It is not a wet/dry vac. It is intended for dry pickup only. The dirt bag is not very large, maybe a quart(?), but is sufficient to clean my cars several times.

2. I also have a 5 HP Ridgid, Model WD4550 which is basically the same unit as the WD4050 shown on the Home Depot site. The difference is that the WD4550 is built in a "Toolbox" configuration that allows everything to be stored in a very compact carrying case. Plenty of suction. Tank size is about 4.5 gallons. This one is a wet/dry vac. It is very convenient for taking it with you.
I think the Craftsman 5 HP, 4 gallon units are built by Ridgid so performance should be pretty comparable.

3. A Sears Craftsman, 5 HP, 12 gallon unit also is in my garage. Another unit that seems to work quite well. This too, is wet/dry. It is short and squatty so it doesn't tip when you pull it around by the hose. That design also make it less handy to haul around in a vehicle.

Just my opinion, but they both look like they would come up a little short in an automotive application.
Hey, I'm about as cheap as they come and I ended up buying $60 units rather than save a little and not be happy with what I bought. :)
